Poetry and literature return to the Giardino di Piazza Vittorio
The Porta Magica Festival is a series dedicated to contemporary poetry and literature held in the Giardino di Piazza Vittorio, in the Esquilino district of Rome, Lazio. Curated by the Esquilino Poesia APS association and conceived by Angelo De Florio, the event brings a dense network of literary meetings, book presentations, verse readings, performances, concerts, and moments of reflection on the power of the word to the large open-air arena every summer.
The festival is part of the historic Notti di Cinema a Piazza Vittorio, the summer series of the CineVillage that has been transforming the square into one of the symbols of the Roman summer for over twenty years. In this context, the Porta Magica Festival carves out its own space, focusing on evening appointments dedicated to culture and poetry.
The festival's name recalls the famous Porta Magica (or Alchemical Gate) kept in the gardens of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, a 17th-century monument covered in esoteric inscriptions that has fueled the legend of the Esquilino for centuries. Surrounding this symbol are the Horti Magici, the Nicola Calipari Gardens, which host the festival evenings in an intimate and evocative atmosphere, sheltered by greenery in the middle of one of the capital's most multicultural neighborhoods.
The fifth edition, scheduled between late June and mid-July 2026, broadened its scope by addressing highly relevant topics such as disability, rare diseases, and inclusion, accompanied by a richer musical offering than in previous years. The opening night, dedicated to the theme Illness as a resource and opportunity, featured a dialogue between authors Angelo De Florio and Francesco Lioce and Dr. Eleonora Torchia from the Policlinico Gemelli, with readings by Emanuele Vezzoli.
Among the events was Pane e Poesia (Bread and Poetry), created in collaboration with the Bakers' Association of Rome and Province, featuring the presentation of the anthology of the same name and a market-exhibition dedicated to the art of baking in the square's gardens.
The Porta Magica Festival is not just poetry: the evenings mix literature, theater, song, and current events, giving voice to both established and emerging authors. The readings aloud, the performances accompanied by live music, and the meetings with writers make up a multidisciplinary program that makes participation and accessibility its distinctive traits.
Organized within the territory of the Municipality of Rome Capital, in the Metropolitan City of Rome and the Lazio region, the festival is an example of widespread and local culture: a free event that brings citizens closer to poetry and enhances a public space in the heart of the Esquilino. For residents, students, and tourists, it is an opportunity to experience Piazza Vittorio in a new light, amidst verses, books, and meetings under the Roman summer sky.
