About Peoples' Festival San Gabriele

Every spring, the Peoples' Festival brings the square of the Sanctuary of San Gabriele dell'Addolorata in Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia (TE) to life with a day of sounds, colors, music, and flavors from across the globe. Promoted by the Diocese of Teramo-Atri, it is a celebration of encounter and friendship between different cultures and religions, bringing together young people from many nations and continents alongside numerous local Abruzzo associations. The morning features stalls, music, and testimonials, while the afternoon hosts the grand International Marian Youth Vigil.

A celebration of encounter between peoples

The Peoples' Festival takes place at the famous Sanctuary of San Gabriele dell'Addolorata, nestled at the foot of the Gran Sasso massif in the municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia, in the province of Teramo (Abruzzo). As one of the most visited sanctuaries in the world, welcoming approximately two million pilgrims annually, its vast square transforms for one day in May into a multicultural hub where languages, traditions, and flavors from distant continents coexist.

Born as a sign of openness and dialogue, the event brings sounds, colors, music, and flavors from around the world to the Sanctuary, in a collective embrace that showcases a welcoming and curious Abruzzo. The underlying theme is always the encounter and friendship between different cultures and religions, expressed through exhibition stands, performances, and moments of reflection and prayer.

Who brings the day to life

The festival is promoted by the Diocese of Teramo-Atri through its parishes and involves dozens of local associations, including Caritas Teramo-Atri, UNITALSI, the Consorzio Solidarietร  Aprutina, folk groups, and international communities. At the heart of the event are the young people: youth from various nations and continents gather at the Sanctuary and connect via live video with their peers in twinned parishes abroad, united in prayer and sharing.

How it unfolds

The day begins in the morning with the opening of the stands and continues with prayer, presentations by the associations, music, theater, and art from the various peoples present. In the afternoon, the Peoples' Festival gives way to the International Marian Youth Vigil, a spiritual moment that draws over a thousand participants and is broadcast via diocesan channels.

An event that unites Abruzzo and the world

More than just a simple festival, the Peoples' Festival is a defining appointment for the community of Isola del Gran Sasso and the entire Diocese of Teramo-Atri: a way to practice hospitality, value the foreign cultures present in the area, and transform the Sanctuary of San Gabriele into a bridge between peoples. Visitors from outside the region will find, in addition to the festival, one of the most evocative places of faith in Abruzzo, set within a unique mountain landscape.
