The Walser patronal feast of Gressoney-La-Trinité, between a costume procession and tradition
The village of Gressoney-La-Trinité, the last municipality in the Lys Valley at the foot of Monte Rosa, takes its name from the Most Holy Trinity, its patron saint. The patronal feast, which always falls on the eighth Sunday after Easter, is one of the most cherished events by the Walser-speaking community, guardians of unique German-speaking costumes, rites, and traditions in the Alps.
The feast unfolds over two days. Saturday evening is dedicated to conviviality: entertainment for children, a community dinner in the multi-purpose hall, live music, and to close the evening, the lighting of the bonfire with the distribution of traditional sweets prepared by the village families.
Sunday, on the other hand, has a more solemn character. After the Mass, the community parades in a religious procession wearing the traditional Walser costume, amidst the stone and wood houses of the center. This is followed by an aperitif in the square with the brass band and lunch, shared according to a tradition that also sees the participation of guest friends from other locations.
The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity is organized by the Pro Loco of Gressoney and represents a strong identity moment for the village: an occasion when the Walser community of Gressoney-La-Trinité, in the province of Aosta, renews its bond with its roots every year, amidst faith, costume, and village celebration.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity will take place on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31 in Gressoney-La-Trinité.
Saturday is dedicated to community celebration, with entertainment and snacks for children, dinner in the multi-purpose hall, live music by the band The Weekenders, and the lighting of the bonfire with distribution of sweets. Sunday, on the other hand, has its heart in the Mass and the procession in traditional Walser costume through the village streets, followed by an aperitif in the square, lunch with fish specialties from friends in Camogli, and a performance by the folk group.
Gressoney-La-Trinité can be reached from Pont-Saint-Martin by going up the Lys Valley along the SR44. The festival takes place in the village center.
