Four days of faith, tradition, and music in the heart of the Tuscia Viterbese
The Patronal Feast of Saints Fidenzio and Terenzio is the most important annual event for Bassano in Teverina, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants perched in the Tuscia Viterbese, in the province of Viterbo and northern Lazio. Every year in late September, the entire community gathers around its two martyr saints for four days that bridge the sacred and the secular, organized by the Festivities Committee in collaboration with the Immacolata Concezione Parish.
Fidenzio and Terenzio are venerated as the town's patrons. Their statues are carried in a solemn procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by civil and religious authorities from the Tuscia region. The Eucharistic celebrations, often presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Civita Castellana, represent the most reflective moments of the festival, while the morning mortar fire and the marching band announce the start of the festivities to the entire village.
Alongside the religious rites, the calendar offers a rich program of secular events that bring the town squares to life until late in the evening:
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to explore one of the most evocative villages in the Viterbo area: Bassano in Teverina preserves a medieval historic center dominated by the characteristic Clock Tower, an ancient cylindrical bell tower, and is located near the area of the ancient Lake Vadimone, the site of famous battles between the Romans and the Etruscans. Strolling through the festive alleys, amidst the lights and the aromas of local cuisine, allows you to experience the authentic identity of this corner of the Lazio Region.
More than just an event, the Patronal Feast of Saints Fidenzio and Terenzio is a gathering point for the entire community of Bassano in Teverina: former residents returning home, families, young members of the Festivities Committee, and visitors from neighboring towns all come together to share tradition, music, and conviviality in one of the most popular patronal festivals in the lower Tuscia.
The Municipality of Bassano in Teverina has confirmed that the traditional festivities of Saints Fidenzio and Terenzio will return in September 2026, closing the summer season. As every year, the program will combine religious celebrations, including the procession of the Martyr Saints and solemn masses, with secular events: the marching band, the fair along the village streets, live music evenings in the square, and the final fireworks display.
By car: Bassano in Teverina can be reached via the A1 motorway (Orte exit), located just a few kilometers from the toll booth along the road to Vasanello and Orte. By train: the Orte station is the closest, well-connected by lines to Rome and Florence, from which you can continue by car or local transport.
Participation in the festivities and performances in the square is free. For dates, updated programs, and information, you can contact the Municipality of Bassano in Teverina (tel. +39 0761 407012) or follow the channels of the Festivities Committee.
The historic center is pedestrianized and partially uphill: comfortable shoes are recommended. On concert evenings, it is advisable to arrive early to find parking in the areas outside the village.
