The patronal feast of Baragiano in honor of Saint Roch, featuring procession, faith, and tradition
Saint Roch is among the most venerated saints in Basilicata, invoked as a protector against epidemics and patron of numerous Lucanian villages. In Baragiano, a small municipality in the province of Potenza overlooking the Marmo Platano area, the feast in his honor is celebrated on August 16th and is one of the most heartfelt moments of the year for the entire community.
The cult of Saint Roch in Basilicata has been documented for centuries and is traditionally linked to protection from plagues. In Baragiano, the feast retains the typical characteristics of Lucanian popular religiosity, with the traditional "cente" – votive offerings of grain or candles – carried as a sign of devotion.
The highlight of the day is the procession with the wooden statue of the saint, which winds through the streets of the historic center accompanied by liturgical chants, the band, and moments of prayer. Alongside the religious part, the civil celebrations liven up the town with musical performances, food stalls, and opportunities for social gathering.
The feast of Saint Roch also represents Baragiano's major summer event for returnees: many emigrants come back to the village, and visitors arrive from neighboring towns, making August 16th a day of strong community cohesion. Promoted by the parish with the support of the Municipality of Baragiano, it preserves the unbroken link between faith, identity, and tradition.
In 2026, Baragiano will again pay homage to its patron saint Saint Roch on August 16th, with the usual blend of religious celebrations – culminating in the procession with the wooden statue – and civil events that liven up the town in the heart of summer.
The detailed program will be announced in the coming weeks by the parish of Baragiano and the Municipality. The festival traditionally includes: solemn masses in the days leading up to August 16th, the procession with the statue of Saint Roch through the streets of the historic center accompanied by the band, and a series of evening musical performances with food stalls.
Baragiano is accessible from the Sicignano-Potenza highway junction (Baragiano exit); it is about a 30-minute drive from Potenza. There is a train station at Baragiano Scalo.
All religious and civil events are free admission.
