The patron saint's feast of Tursi and the Lucania Summer Festival
The Patronal Feast of Saint Philip Neri is one of the most cherished events in Tursi, an ancient village in the Province of Matera, famous for its picturesque Rabatana, the district of Arab origin. The feast, held at the end of May, combines religious and civic dimensions, with a solemn Mass presided over by the Bishop and a procession of the patron saint through the town's streets.
In recent years, the civic celebrations have been enhanced by the Lucania Summer Festival, which, in Piazza Maria SS. di Anglona, officially kicks off the summer event season in the Metapontino area. Featuring folk groups, themed parties, and musical performances, the evening attracts audiences from neighboring municipalities thanks to a dedicated shuttle service.
The feast is an opportunity to discover Tursi, its cathedral, and the Rabatana made famous by the verses of the dialect poet Albino Pierro. With the support of the Municipality of Tursi and local entities, Saint Philip Neri becomes a moment for the community to come together and welcome visitors for the Lucanian summer.
The celebrations for Tursi's patron saint conclude on Tuesday, May 26th, with the main day, including liturgy, procession, and the grand evening event of the Lucania Summer Festival.
On the same days, further religious and civil events are scheduled (May 24-25); details are disseminated by the organizers in the preceding weeks. Shuttle service (approx. €10 per person) from Ferrandina, Pisticci, Montalbano Jonico, Marconia, Bernalda, Policoro, and Nova Siri.
How to get there: Tursi is accessible via the SS653 Sinnica, near the Ionian coast; about 30 minutes from Policoro.
Tickets: free entry to events; paid shuttle service (approx. €10) from neighboring municipalities.
Accommodation: B&Bs in Tursi and facilities on the Ionian coast (Policoro, Nova Siri).
