The small village of Val d'Agri celebrates its patron saint
Missanello is one of those small villages in Basilicata where time seems to flow more slowly: a few hundred inhabitants, stone houses overlooking the Val d'Agri, a very strong bond with its traditions. The most anticipated moment of the year is the Patronal Feast of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint, celebrated in May with great participation from the entire community.
Saint Nicholas of Bari, one of the most illustrious saints venerated in both the East and the West, Bishop of Myra, is the patron saint of the town. His feast is a moment of strong popular devotion, marked by solemn masses, a procession with the statue of the saint through the village streets, and the usual civil celebrations with music, lights, and stalls.
A special treasure is linked to the feast: the 15th-century Processional Cross, a work of art of inestimable value, finely chased and embellished with small sculptures on both sides. Normally kept in the museum of the Diocese of Tricarico, the cross periodically returns to Missanello thanks to diocesan agreements, becoming the symbolic heart of the patronal celebrations and an attraction for those who wish to discover the village's heritage.
Promoted by the parish and supported by the Municipality of Missanello, the feast is a precious opportunity to rediscover the authenticity of the Val d'Agri, far from mass tourist circuits. Those who participate find a welcoming community proud of its roots, in the silent and evocative setting of the Lucanian hinterland, in the Province of Potenza.
In 2026, Missanello will once again celebrate its patron saint, Saint Nicholas, with the traditional May feast. The community gathers around the Mother Church for religious services and the procession, accompanied by civil festivities. The precise date and the potential exhibition of the 15th-century Processional Cross will be announced by the parish and the Municipality in the weeks prior.
The detailed program will be published by the parish of Missanello closer to the feast. The celebration traditionally unfolds as follows:
The exact dates and full program will be announced in the coming weeks.
Missanello can be reached from the SS 598 of Val d'Agri and from the provincial roads of the area. The feast takes place in the historic center, around the Mother Church.
All events are free admission.
