The town of ceramics celebrates its patron saint in the heart of the Sannio summer

The Patronal Feast of Saint Lawrence the Martyr is the most heartfelt event of the year in San Lorenzello, a town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the province of Benevento, in inland Campania. The town bears the name of the saint it venerates and celebrates his memory on August 10th, the date the Church remembers the Roman deacon martyred in Rome in the 3rd century. For the Valle Telesina community, this is not just a simple liturgical calendar recurrence: it is the moment of the year when the entire village reaffirms its identity, welcomes back those who have emigrated, and fills the streets of the historic center.
The uniqueness of this feast lies in its duration. Everything begins in the final days of July with the peregrinatio: the image of the patron saint is carried through the town's districts, welcomed from neighborhood to neighborhood with prayers, songs, and small altars set up in front of homes. From August 1st, the novena begins in the parish, nine days of evening celebrations that provide spiritual preparation for the saint's day. Only afterwards do the festive evenings arrive, traditionally three, which in recent editions have taken place on August 8th, 9th, and 10th: illuminated streets, a stage in the square, market stalls, and the community staying out until late at night.
The religious heart of the feast remains the Church of San Lorenzo, the town's mother church, rebuilt after the 1805 earthquake and expanded at the end of the 19th century, which houses the wooden sculpture of the patron saint solemnly venerated in August. On August 10th, masses are held throughout the morning, often attended by the bishop of the Diocese of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant'Agata de' Goti or priests originally from the town, and in the late afternoon, the statue is carried in procession along the streets of the center, accompanied by confraternities and the brass band.
In the Sannio region, the patronal feast does not end without fireworks. In San Lorenzello, the pyromusical show that seals the event has been cited for years by pyrotechnics enthusiasts as one of the must-see appointments in the province of Benevento: batteries synchronized with music, fired from the fields on the edge of town and watched by thousands of people positioned along the roads and at panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Titerno River.
Those who arrive for the feast discover a village with a precise artisanal vocation. San Lorenzello shares with nearby Cerreto Sannita a ceramic production documented since the 17th century, recognized nationally as Cerreto Sannita and San Lorenzello ceramics: active workshops, traditional decorations with unmistakable colors, and a heritage that can also be found in the furnishings of the town's sacred buildings, such as the Church of the Congregazione della Sanitร . During the days of the feast, the workshops remain an extra reason for a stroll through the historic center, between the former Carmelite Fathers' convent and the rural chapels.
This is an authentic village feast, not an event built for tourism: people come for the devotion, for the return of families, for the band playing under the church balcony, and for the night of the fireworks. Those looking for the most genuine Sannio summer will find here, in mid-August, a good starting point to explore the Valle Telesina, Cusano Mutri, Faicchio, and the Titerno gorges. The events are mostly outdoors and free to enter, and the program is released close to the feast by the committee and the parish, primarily through dedicated social media channels.
At the moment, there are no official communications regarding the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Lawrence the Martyr in San Lorenzello, in the province of Benevento. However, the feast is a fixed appointment in the town's calendar, linked to the liturgical memory of the patron saint which falls every year on August 10th.
In documented editions, the structure is always the same: peregrinatio of the saint's image through the districts in the final days of July, evening novena in the parish starting August 1st, and then the concluding evenings with the solemn procession and the pyromusical show. We do not publish a 2026 program to avoid reporting unverified information: as soon as the festival committee releases the poster, this page will be updated with dates, times, and events.
By car: San Lorenzello can be reached from the SS 372 Telesina, exiting towards Cerreto Sannita-San Lorenzello; from the A1 motorway, exit at Caianello, and from the A16 at Benevento. On festive evenings, the historic center is largely closed to traffic: it is advisable to leave the car in parking areas on the outskirts of town and continue on foot.
By train: the nearest station is Telese Terme-Cerreto Sannita, a few kilometers away, connected to the town by local bus lines (reduced service on public holidays).
Religious celebrations, the procession, performances in the square, and fireworks are traditionally free of charge. Only purchases at stalls and local bars are paid.
