About Feast of Saint George

The Patronal Feast of Saint George is the most cherished event of the year in Gropello Cairoli, in the province of Pavia. A spring Sunday when Via Libertà closes to traffic and transforms into a large fair with about a hundred stalls of artisan products, gastronomic specialties, traditional sweets, and merchandise of all kinds. Between a solemn mass, a funfair, and conviviality, the town celebrates its patron saint, Saint George the Martyr, in a festival that combines devotion, commerce, and tradition.

A Village Festival Between Faith and Market

The Patronal Feast of Saint George, combined with the Spring Fair, is the most important event on the calendar in Gropello Cairoli, a municipality in Lomellina, province of Pavia. Dedicated to Saint George the Martyr, the town's patron saint, the festival intertwines the religious and the popular and commercial aspects, on a day that draws visitors from all over the area.

A Hundred Stalls Along Via Libertà

The heart of the fair is Via Libertà, closed to traffic and transformed into a long open-air market. Along the street, there are about one hundred stalls with artisan products, gastronomic specialties, traditional sweets, clothing, and household items. Exhibitor spots are assigned well in advance and sell out every year, a sign of the vitality of this event. It is still possible to participate as spontaneous vendors by showing up on the day.

Mass, Oratory, and Funfair

Alongside the fair, the religious program includes a solemn mass in honor of the patron saint, followed by an aperitif-lunch at the oratory. The Pro Loco manages a refreshment point, the municipal library opens with a used book sale, and the sports field hosts the funfair, active for several days around the festival. A day that brings together all the souls of Gropello Cairoli, from associations to families, in a climate of widespread celebration.
