The feast of the patron saint of Casarile
The Patronal Feast of Saint Blaise is the most important festival of the year for Casarile, a municipality in the Province of Milan in the plain south of the capital. Saint Blaise, a bishop and martyr who lived in Armenia between the 3rd and 4th centuries, is venerated as the protector of the throat, and for this reason his feast day, February 3rd, is particularly dear to popular devotion.
The most anticipated rite is the traditional blessing of the throat: the faithful approach the priest who, crossing two blessed candles under the chin, invokes the saint's protection against throat ailments. It is an ancient gesture, repeated from generation to generation, which draws even those who do not normally attend celebrations to church.
The celebrations do not end in a single day: the parish community, led by the Parish of San Biagio, prepares for the occasion with days of prayer, Eucharistic adoration, and masses in the preceding days. The eve coincides with Candlemas (February 2nd), with the blessing of candles. The feast day itself brings the solemn mass, an evening choral concert, moments dedicated to catechism children, and bingo in the parish hall, a truly convivial event for the town.
Casarile retains a strong rural identity, with its historic districts and the church of San Biagio overlooking the municipal square. The patronal feast is the occasion when this identity becomes most visible: for a few days, the town in the Milanese area gathers around its church and its traditions, in a simple and familiar atmosphere far from large city events.
In 2026, the patronal feast of Saint Blaise in Casarile falls on Tuesday, February 3rd. As per tradition, the occasion is preceded by a week of religious preparation in the parish church of San Biagio, with masses, Eucharistic adoration, and prayers to the saint. The eve coincides with Candlemas on February 2nd. On the feast day, the blessing of the throat, the solemn mass, and convivial gatherings in the parish hall take place.
The precise program for the 2026 edition, including times for masses and events, will be released by the parish in the weeks leading up to the feast. The traditional structure of the celebrations includes:
