The patronal feast of Mirandola and San Possidonio, in the heart of the Trade Fair
The Patron Saint Possidonio Festival is one of the most cherished events in the Bassa Modenese region: in mid-May, the Municipalities of Mirandola and San Possidonio, in the province of Modena (Emilia-Romagna), celebrate their common patron saint together. It is an inter-parish festival, built year after year as a shared journey between the two parishes, culminating on May 16th and 17th.
According to tradition, Possidonio was a bishop of Byzantine origin, who lived between the 4th and 5th centuries. His relics are said to have arrived from Puglia to the lands of the Bassa, and the locality that welcomed them later took the name of San Possidonio. His remains were officially recognized as relics of the saint in 1937 by the Bishop of Carpi. His liturgical feast day falls on May 16th, the date around which the entire festival revolves.
The patronal feast is not an isolated event; it is integrated into the program of the Mirandola Fair, one of the oldest in Emilia-Romagna, which animates the historic center for several days in mid-May with stalls, exhibitors, and initiatives. The celebration of the patron saint thus enriches a festival already packed with civil and popular events with religious and community significance.
It is a festival where the spiritual dimension intertwines with the social one and with attention to the younger generation, in a full spirit of communion between Mirandola and San Possidonio.
More than an event attracting tourists, the Patron Saint Possidonio Festival is a moment of identity for the Bassa Modenese territory. Visitors to Mirandola during the festival days will find a lively city, animated by the Fair and gathered around its religious traditions, in an authentic and familiar atmosphere.
The 2026 edition, the fourth inter-parish edition shared between Mirandola and San Possidonio, took place from May 13th to 17th, intertwined with the Mirandola Fair. The common thread was the reflection on the values of peace and integral ecology, in a spirit of communion between the two parishes.
The main celebrations take place in Mirandola (Piazza Costituente and Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore) and at the parish of San Possidonio (MO). Mirandola is about 30 km from Modena.
By car: take the A22 Brennero motorway, exit at Carpi, then take the Cispadana expressway to Mirandola. By train: Mirandola station on the regional line, then a few minutes' walk to the center.
