The patronal feast of Falconara Marittima in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary
The Patron Saint Festival is the most important religious event for the community of Falconara Marittima, a city on the Adriatic coast in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region. Every year, around May 8th, the Municipality rallies around its protector, the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary of Pompei, in a celebration that intertwines popular devotion, tradition, and cultural moments.
The devotion in Falconara is linked to a copy of the image of the Madonna venerated in the famous Sanctuary of Pompei. According to tradition, the effigy was donated to the city by Blessed Bartolo Longo, founder of the Sanctuary of Pompei, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since then, the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary has been venerated as the patron saint of Falconara, and her image is kept in the Marian Shrine on Via Baldoni, the spiritual heart of the festival.
The central moment of the celebrations is the solemn Mass, presided over by the Archbishop of Ancona-Osimo, Msgr. Angelo Spina, and concelebrated by local priests. At the end of the liturgy, the traditional procession begins through the streets of the center: the procession, accompanied by the Castelferretti Band, starts from the square in front of the Church of the Rosary and crosses Via Leopardi, Via Trento, Via Bixio, Piazza Garibaldi, and Via IV Novembre, before returning to the parish. The faithful accompany the effigy of the Madonna in a moment of intense community participation.
Around the patronal day, the parish and local associations offer a rich calendar of events: cultural and spiritual meetings, performances by the Stella Maris oratory, art conferences, and musical moments. The festival thus becomes an opportunity to rediscover the roots of the Falconara community and to experience together the religious and civil dimension of the city.
Civil and military authorities, volunteer associations, and citizens usually participate in the celebration, testifying to the deep bond between Falconara Marittima and its patron saint. The Patron Saint Festival remains one of the most important identity events in the city's calendar in the Marche region.
