Devotion, the Cavalcata, and the Calata dell'Angelo in the heart of Mount Etna
The Patriarch Saint Joseph Festival is one of the most deeply rooted devotional events in Mascalucia, a town on the southern slopes of Mount Etna in the province of Catania, Sicily. Every year, around the canonical date of March 19th, the community gathers around the figure of Patriarch Saint Joseph, venerated in the Santa Maria della Consolazione Parish. The festival merges religious observance with a rich heritage of Sicilian popular traditions, turning the town streets into a stage for faith, color, and ancient rites.
The festivities begin with the novena, nine days of spiritual preparation announced by the ringing of the church bells, guiding the faithful toward the solemn day. On the evening of March 18th, the eve of the festival, the artistic illuminations are switched on, lighting up the squares and main streets and creating the atmosphere that heralds the most awaited day.
The day of March 19th opens with the festive sound of bells and the collection of offerings for the traditional auction (the "usta di San Giuseppe") held in the main square. After the Eucharistic celebration, the distribution of blessed bread takes place, a symbolic gesture linked to devotion to Saint Joseph and charity toward the needy. In the afternoon, the evocative Cavalcata di San Giuseppe is held, a parade of caparisoned horses and richly decorated Sicilian carts, featuring a representation of the Holy Family: a living tableau that recalls the peasant and artisan identity of the Etna territory.
The highlight is the procession of the statue of Saint Joseph, which leaves the church to the sound of the brass band, the throwing of colorful confetti, and the ringing of bells. The procession travels along the main thoroughfares of the center, including Via Etnea, Via Marconi, Via Timparello, and Via Roma, with a stop in front of the church of San Vito Martire for a moment of prayer. At the ancient church of San Nicola, the characteristic Calata dell'Angelo takes place—a spectacular rite where a child dressed as an angel is lowered to pay homage to the Saint. The day concludes with the solemn return of the statue to the church, accompanied by fireworks.
The Patriarch Saint Joseph Festival in Mascalucia represents one of the most authentic chapters of Sicilian religious folklore, where the cult of the Saint intertwines with the "tavolate" (traditional banquets) of popular devotion, the carts, local gastronomy, and the sense of belonging of an Etna community. A precious opportunity to discover the cultural and spiritual roots of this corner of the province of Catania.
For the 2026 edition, the Santa Maria della Consolazione Parish in Mascalucia confirmed the usual program for the Saint Joseph patronal festival. The novena prepared the community starting from March 9th, while on the evening of March 18th, the artistic illuminations were switched on.
