Four days of the Middle Ages around the castle of Arquà Polesine
The Palio dei Ochi is one of the most beloved historical reenactments in the province of Rovigo. For four days, around the evocative castle of Arquà Polesine, the town centre transforms into a medieval village populated by soldiers, flag-wavers, musicians, falconers, jugglers, and period encampments. An organisational effort involving over fifty historical re-enactors and the entire community.
The heart of the event is the competition between the four districts of Arquà – Redinari, Lanaroi, Zestari, and Scoari – who vie for the Palio through games and tests of skill. The most anticipated event is the Corsa dei Ochi, the race of the geese that determines the winning district of the year. There are also castle assaults, historical parades, and fire shows.
Throughout the Palio, historic gastronomic areas remain open, such as the Taverna delle Barchesse and the Locanda de lo Porco, as well as the exclusive Banchetto del Podestà (Podestà's Banquet), a medieval dinner with live entertainment and costumed service. The grand finale is a pyromusical show that lights up the sky above the castle.
After the Palio, the festivities continue with Arquà in Festa, a week of music, shows, sports, and culture that keeps the festive atmosphere alive in the town. Together, these events represent the highlight of the year for the community of Arquà Polesine.
The 38th edition of the Palio dei Ochi will be held from May 30 to June 2, 2026, around the castle of Arquà Polesine. Thousands of visitors are expected for the historical reenactments, popular traditions, period gastronomy, and entertainment that will transform the town into a medieval village for four days. The four districts – Redinari, Lanaroi, Zestari, and Scoari – will compete to win the Palio.
