About Palio dea Caretera
A challenge between the two castles
The Palio dea Caretera de Marostega is a race of wooden carts held on the slope from the Upper Castle to the Lower Castle of Marostica (province of Vicenza, Veneto), through the picturesque Roveredo valley. The course winds for about 2,000 meters with a drop of 124 meters, from the altitude of 224 meters of the upper castle down to 100 meters of the lower castle.
Handcrafted carts and a spirit of fun
The carts are vehicles handcrafted from local wood: three longitudinal beams, two crossbeams, and wooden wheels covered with rubber, today enhanced with accessories of all kinds. The race brings together all the hamlets and villages of Marostica in a competition focused on fun and local pride.
A post-war tradition
The idea of a cart race was born in 1956, in the post-war years, within the Marostica university circle, as a lighthearted downhill challenge. Since then, the Palio has become a regular event, traditionally held on the second Sunday of June, organized by the Associazione Caretera de Marostega.
Palio dea Caretera — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the Palio dea Caretera de Marostega is scheduled for June 13 and 14. The wooden carts, handcrafted by the teams from the hamlets, launch themselves in the traditional descent connecting the Upper Castle to the Lower Castle, for about 2,000 meters and a 124-meter drop. The event, organized by the Associazione Caretera de Marostega, combines goliardic competition, artisanal construction of the vehicles, and local pride among the villages of the municipality.

How to get there
Marostica is reachable by car from the A31 motorway (exit Dueville or Thiene-Schio) towards Bassano del Grappa. The nearest train station is Bassano del Grappa (about 8 km). The race course connects the Upper Castle to the Lower Castle.
