The national literature prize for Italian doctor-writers
The National Literary Prize "Splendida Matera" is a cultural event established in Matera in 2019, as part of the initiatives for the city designated European Capital of Culture. Promoted by the Order of Physicians and Dentists of the Province of Matera, with the patronage of the Association of Italian Doctor-Writers (A.M.S.I.), the prize has progressively established itself as one of the most appreciated events in the Italian doctor-writers scene.
The core of the prize is the valorization of writing as an expression of the doctor's human and professional sensitivity. The event aims to be a space for comparison between science and humanism, divided into sections for poetry, narrative, and essays: themes are open, with particular attention to Southern Italian culture and Matera in particular.
The prize unfolds over two days: an evening dedicated to the presentation of a volume, hosted at the Circolo Culturale La Scaletta, and the official awards ceremony, held in the "G. Moscati" Auditorium of the Madonna delle Grazie Hospital in Matera. The event consolidates the city's role as a center for cultural dialogue in Southern Italy.
Included in the rich cultural offerings of Matera, the city of the Sassi and Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026, the prize is supported by the Order of Physicians and local cultural institutions, confirming the link between the city and the world of literature.
The 6th edition of the National Literary Prize "Splendida Matera", promoted by the Order of Physicians of the Province of Matera, unfolded over two days, March 27 and 28, 2026.
The event confirmed its vocation as a space for dialogue between science and humanism, with sections for poetry, narrative, and essays dedicated to Italian doctor-writers.
