About Montesacro Music Festival

Every June 21st, on the summer solstice, the Montesacro district transforms into a vast, open-air stage. The Rome Municipality III Music Festival brings over fifty bands, choirs, music schools, and solo artists to Piazza Sempione, the Portici of Via Monte Cervialto, Villa di Faonte, and Piazza Franco Califano. From 6 PM to 11 PM, live music fills the streets and gardens of northern Rome, always with free admission.

A neighborhood celebration on the longest day of the year

The Music Festival of Rome Municipality III Montesacro is the local interpretation of the great European celebration that, every June 21st, on the summer solstice, opens city streets to live music. In Rome, the event involves the entire capital, but the northern quadrant has built a distinct identity over the years: here, the festival is not concentrated on a single main stage, but scattered across the places residents visit every day, restoring the square to its role as a shared space.

The musical venues in Montesacro

The heart of the day is Piazza Sempione, the living room of Montesacro, overlooking the Santi Angeli Custodi church and the Municipality headquarters. Around this hub, the program expands to other equipped spaces in the area:

  • Piazza Sempione — the main stage, featuring bands, groups, and solo artists;
  • Portici of Via Monte Cervialto 142 — a more intimate urban setting, ideal for acoustic performances;
  • Villa di Faonte and the Casali of Via delle Vigne Nuove — greenery and archaeology as a backdrop;
  • Piazza Franco Califano, in Vigne Nuove, and Parco dei Sassi in Nuovo Salario;
  • Council Chamber of the Municipality (Piazza Sempione 15) — a space reserved primarily for choirs, in an intimate setting with excellent acoustics;
  • Via Monte Ruggero, the school street, hosting local music schools.

Who performs

The formula is explicitly participatory: there is no artistic director hiring headliners, but an open call addressed to bands, choirs, musical groups, music schools, and local solo artists. Those wishing to perform submit their application to the Municipality by the deadline set each spring. The result is a mosaic featuring neighborhood cover bands, wind ensembles, polyphonic choirs, music students, and emerging original projects: in the 2026 edition, over fifty musical acts participated.

How to experience the day

Performances take place from 6 PM to 11 PM, when the Roman heat of June eases and the daylight lingers. There is no need to book or buy tickets: you simply stroll from one point to another following the sound, stopping where the music catches your ear, and moving on. It is a format that works well for families and restores to Montesacro — a district founded in the 1920s as a garden city and still recognizable today for its villas and pine trees — the atmosphere of a village within the metropolis.

The context: the Music Festival in Italy

Born in France in 1982 and spread throughout Europe, the Music Festival is coordinated in Italy by the AIPFM under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture. The 2026 edition, the thirty-second, chose the theme «The voice of places», dedicated to choirs and local uniqueness: a common thread that naturally fits the Municipality III project, built on the very idea that the neighborhood's locations give voice to the music.

Rome Capital and Municipality III

The event is promoted and organized by Rome Municipality III Montesacro, one of the fifteen municipalities of the City of Rome, in the Lazio Region. It is part of the broader program with which Rome Capital accompanies June 21st throughout the city, from national museums to historic squares in the center. Participation is always free, both for the audience and the musicians.

Montesacro Music Festival — edition 2026

Third edition of the Rome Municipality III Montesacro Music Festival. On June 21, 2026, from 6 PM to 11 PM, over fifty bands, choirs, music schools, and solo artists performed at Piazza Sempione, the Portici of Via Monte Cervialto, Villa di Faonte, Piazza Franco Califano, and the Municipality Council Chamber. All events were free of charge, under the national theme «The voice of places».

Third edition, over fifty ensembles

The 2026 edition confirmed the project's growth: more than fifty bands, choirs, groups, and solo artists from the area responded to the open call launched by Rome Municipality III, distributed across a network of venues between Montesacro, Nuovo Salario, and Vigne Nuove. Applications closed on May 29, 2026.

The theme: «The voice of places»

The thirty-second Italian Music Festival was dedicated to choirs and local uniqueness, a theme that Municipality III translated by enhancing unconventional spaces: the Portici of Via Monte Cervialto, the greenery of Villa di Faonte, and the school street of Via Monte Ruggero. The Council Chamber of Piazza Sempione hosted choral groups in particular, including the Ukulele Orchestra of Ukus in Fabula, which offered a repertoire with diverse colors and atmospheres.
