The Montereale–Capitignano Road Race, also known as The Montereale–Capitignano, is a road race held in the mountainous hinterland of the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. The 9.8-kilometre course connects the two towns of Capitignano and Montereale, nestled in the Upper Aterno Valley at the foot of the mountains separating the L'Aquila area from the Rieti area, about 130 km from Rome.
The event is organized by the ASD Nova Gesta non-profit and takes place under the aegis of FIDAL (Italian Athletics Federation), with the patronage of the Municipalities of Capitignano and Montereale and the Abruzzo Region.
The event is not reserved for professional athletes alone: alongside the competitive race, several formats are offered to involve the entire community.
The meeting point is in Piazza del Municipio in Capitignano, the starting point of the race that winds along scenic roads all the way to Montereale.
The Montereale–Capitignano is much more than just a running race: it is a moment of gathering for the two communities of the Upper Aterno Valley, a mountain area of inland Abruzzo marked by past seismic events. Running or walking along this route means traversing beautiful Apennine landscapes and supporting the vitality of the small villages in the province of L'Aquila.
Registration is available online via the Endu platform or on-site in the days leading up to the race and on the morning of the event until shortly before the start.
At the moment, the organizers of the ASD Nova Gesta non-profit have not yet announced the date for the 2026 edition of the Montereale–Capitignano Road Race. Based on previous editions, the event is usually scheduled for late July, starting from Piazza del Municipio in Capitignano and finishing in Montereale along a 9.8 km route in the province of L'Aquila.
The program and registration details will be published on the official website and the Endu platform as soon as they become available.
Capitignano is located in the Upper Aterno Valley, in the province of L'Aquila, about 130 km from Rome. By car, it can be reached via the A24 motorway (exit L'Aquila Ovest), continuing towards Montereale on the SS260. The reference railway station is L'Aquila.
Online registration is available via the Endu platform; in-person registration is also possible in the days before the race in Capitignano and on the morning of the event at the starting line. The meeting point is Piazza del Municipio in Capitignano.
As this is a summer mountain route, technical clothing, a cap, and a water supply are recommended. For accommodation, please refer to the facilities in the L'Aquila area and the Upper Aterno Valley.
