Six evenings of theatre, music, and cinema in the Cloister of San Domenico in Fondi
The Midsummer Festival is the event that, at the end of July, brings the Cloister of San Domenico in Fondi, in the province of Latina, Southern Lazio, to life. The Dominican complex, with its arches and central well, becomes a natural theatre hall for several evenings: no invasive structures, no raised stage, just chairs arranged around the scene and the ancient architecture as a backdrop.
The festival is promoted by the On Broadway company and curated by artistic director Giovanni Pannozzo, who over the years has built a deliberately heterogeneous program capable of speaking to both families and the most demanding spectators.
The hallmark of the Midsummer Festival is the absence of a raised stage. The performers act on the same level as the spectators, so that every gesture and every look arrives without filters. It is a choice declared by the artistic direction: to bring theatre back to its original nature, that of human encounter, and at the same time to enhance the proportions of the cloister, which becomes a set design in itself.
The program alternates productions by the On Broadway Academy school, which brings its studentsโfrom the youngest to adult groupsโto the stage, with brilliant comedies, musical shows, and evenings dedicated to cinema. Over the years, the festival has hosted open-air screenings, civil meetings, and moments of collective memory, proving that a provincial summer festival can have authentic cultural ambitions.
Fondi is one of the most interesting towns in the province of Latina: its historic centre preserves the Baronial Castle, the Prince's Palace, the Giudea district, and the San Domenico complex, with the adjoining church of San Tommaso d'Aquino. Its position, between the Ausoni Mountains and the Tyrrhenian coast, makes the city a convenient base for those visiting the Pontine coast in summer who are looking for a cultural alternative to the beach in the evening.
The festival is sponsored by the Natural Regional Park of the Ausoni Mountains and Lake Fondi, the Municipality of Fondi, and the Lazio Region, as well as the Frosinone-Latina Chamber of Commerce and the Latina Film Commission.
Those looking for a mass-market event will find something quite different here: a small-scale festival where the relationship with the performers is intimate and the atmosphere remains familiar. It is precisely this scale, combined with the beauty of the cloister on summer evenings, that explains the festival's rapid consolidation in the cultural calendar of the province of Latina.
The 2026 edition of the Midsummer Festival takes place from July 29 to August 3 in the Cloister of San Domenico in Fondi, in the province of Latina. Six consecutive appointments confirm the formula that has made the festival recognizable: scene at the same level as the audience, no raised stage, and the cloister's architecture as the only set design.
The program alternates productions by the On Broadway Academy school, comedies from the brilliant repertoire, a musical show, and an evening dedicated to Italian cinema. The festival is sponsored by the Monti Ausoni Park Authority, the Municipality of Fondi, and the Lazio Region, with the support of the Frosinone-Latina Chamber of Commerce and the Latina Film Commission.
