About Mediterraneo da Remare

Mediterraneo da Remare #PlasticFree #NoLitter is the long-standing travelling campaign promoted by the UniVerde Foundation in collaboration with the Marevivo Foundation, dedicated to fighting plastic pollution in seas, rivers, and lakes. The launch event for the 16th edition took place on June 15, 2026, at the CNR Sala Marconi in Piazzale Aldo Moro, Rome, focusing on the 30x30 Objective for the protection of coastal and marine areas. Every year, the campaign combines awareness-raising, scientific research, and canoe-based cleanup activities along the banks of the Tiber and Mediterranean coastlines.

A national campaign for the sea, starting from Rome

Mediterraneo da Remare #PlasticFree #NoLitter is the travelling campaign promoted by the UniVerde Foundation in collaboration with the Marevivo Foundation. Established in 2011, it aims to combat all forms of pollution in seas and river basins, with a specific focus on plastics. The Lazio Region and the City of Rome host the annual launch event, which kicks off a season of initiatives along marine, river, and lake shores throughout Italy.

The 16th edition and the 30x30 Objective

The 2026 edition, the sixteenth, held its launch event on Monday, June 15, 2026, in the prestigious Sala Marconi at the headquarters of the National Research Council (CNR), located at Piazzale Aldo Moro 7, in the university district between Sapienza and the CNR. The core theme was the 30x30 Objective: to protect and restore at least 30% of marine and coastal areas by 2030, in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, with a focus on "coasts, seas, and islands to protect and restore" and the establishment of new Marine Protected Areas.

Who promotes the campaign

Alongside the UniVerde Foundation and the Marevivo Foundation, the campaign features the long-standing support of the Port Captaincies Corps - Coast Guard and, as of 2026, the participation of the National Research Council. This initiative brings together institutions, the scientific community, sports, and civil society around a common goal: the protection of the Mediterranean.

  • Promoters: UniVerde Foundation and Marevivo Foundation
  • Institutional support: Coast Guard, CNR
  • Themes: anti-plastic, sustainable tourism, Marine Protected Areas
  • Field activities: canoe-based cleanup of the Tiber banks and coastlines

More than just a conference

The launch event in Rome serves as an institutional and scientific starting point for a concrete, participatory campaign. Throughout the year, volunteers and enthusiasts collect waste from waterways and coasts, including from canoes and kayaks, turning environmental cleanup into an opportunity for outdoor sports and civic education. The campaign also promotes the transition toward more sustainable and responsible tourism along marine, river, and lake shores.

An event for Rome and Lazio

By hosting the national launch, Rome confirms its role as a capital of environmental sustainability. The event is aimed at citizens, students, researchers, athletes, and anyone who cares about the health of the Mediterranean Sea and the river that flows through the Capital, the Tiber, offering an opportunity for information, discussion, and direct action.
