Two days of faith, local market, and food festival in the heart of the San Rocco district
In Ariano Irpino, in the province of Avellino, the Madonna del Carmine Festival is more than just a date on the liturgical calendar: it is the defining event for the San Rocco district, the historic neighborhood stretching along the city's ridge. Devotion to the Virgin of Mount Carmel, nurtured by the presence of Capuchin friars and passed down through generations of local families, is renewed every year on July 15th and 16th with intense liturgy and a community celebration that involves the entire town.
The festival is preceded by a long period of preparation. At the beginning of July, the peregrinatio begins: the statue of the Madonna leaves the parish church and is welcomed, stop by stop, in the city's various neighborhoods, from San Liberatore to San Tommaso, from the San Pietro district to the Ponnola area and Santa Maria a Tuoro. This is followed by the novena, from July 6th to 14th, with the Holy Rosary at 6:45 PM and Holy Mass at 7:00 PM. On the eve of the festival, the community gathers for a torchlight procession toward the Frangipane-Bellizzi Hospital, a symbolic embrace for the sick and the healthcare staff.
The vigil begins with the Holy Rosary at 5:30 PM and Mass at 6:30 PM, followed by the procession through the parish streets. This is the most anticipated moment of the entire festival: the statue travels through the narrow alleys of the district amidst lights and decorated balconies, in a ritual that remains almost unchanged in Ariano and continues to draw back emigrants who return home specifically for these days.
The day of the solemnity is marked by a series of Eucharistic celebrations starting before dawn and ending late at night: 5:30, 7:00, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30, 17:30, 19:00, 20:30, and 22:00. The 10:00 AM Mass is traditionally presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia, Monsignor Sergio Melillo. Confessions are available throughout the day, and the church remains a constant hub of activity.
Alongside the religious dimension is the fair, which gives the event its name. After a period of being relocated, the traditional fair in honor of the Madonna del Carmine has returned to its original location, along the historic streets of the San Rocco district. It takes place from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, bringing back to the neighborhood the stalls of goods, clothing, household items, tools, and local produce that have always accompanied the great festivals of Irpinia: a town market that serves as both a shopping opportunity and a social ritual.
In the evening, the town center changes its face. Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the square of the San Domenico rectory host the civil entertainment program and, above all, the festival of cicatiello and Ariano-style stew, the two signature dishes of local cuisine: cicatiello, a fresh handmade pasta typical of eastern Irpinia, and the Ariano-style stew, a slow-cooked meat dish that is almost a trademark of the town. People eat in the street, sitting at tables set up along the main road, while musical groups perform on stage.
Sprawled across three hills at nearly 800 meters above sea level, Ariano Irpino is the main center of eastern Irpinia, in Campania: a land of artistic ceramics, high-altitude wines, and a dense network of district festivals that mark the town's summer, from Saint Anthony to Saint Mary of the Martyrs. The Madonna del Carmine Festival is among the most heartfelt and allows visitors to experience authentic popular religiosity, far from mass tourism circuits.
The news that characterized the 2026 edition is the return of the fair in honor of the Madonna del Carmine to its place of origin, along the historic street of the San Rocco district, as previously seen for the Saint Anthony festival. A return long requested by residents and announced by the municipal administration, which restores to the neighborhood its traditional festival market during the classic time slot, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Celebrations began at the start of July with the peregrinatio of the statue, welcomed in six stages in the neighborhoods of San Liberatore, San Tommaso, the San Pietro district, the Ponnola area, and Santa Maria a Tuoro. From July 6th to 14th, the novena was led by the parish priest Father Antonio Lo Conte, with the rosary at 6:45 PM and Mass at 7:00 PM; on July 14th, the torchlight procession took place toward the Frangipane-Bellizzi Hospital.
Wednesday, July 15th, after the 5:30 PM rosary and 6:30 PM mass, the procession traveled through the parish streets. Thursday, July 16th, the solemnity of the Madonna del Carmine, saw holy masses from 5:30 AM until 10:00 PM, with the 10:00 AM celebration presided over by Monsignor Sergio Melillo. On the civil side, the Zeketam concert and the show with Fabiana Conti, directed by Maurizio Blaso, animated the evenings, along with the festival of cicatiello and Ariano-style stew on Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the San Domenico rectory square.
