Lucignano's flower festival: floral floats and a competition between the four districts
The Maggiolata Lucignanese is one of Tuscany's most beloved spring events and the signature celebration of Lucignano, a small, elliptical medieval village in the Arezzo province, nestled in the Valdichiana valley. Established in 1937 as a festival linked to the agricultural rites of May, the Maggiolata celebrates the arrival of spring with a triumph of fresh flowers: the name itself comes from 'maggiolata', the ancient folk song that welcomed the renewal of nature.
The heart of the festival lies in the allegorical floats, genuine works of ephemeral art built entirely with over 100,000 fresh flowers. They are created by the four Rioni (districts) that divide the village, competing each year by interpreting a common theme:
The floats parade through the streets and squares of the historic center, accompanied by bands and folk groups from across Italy and abroad. At the end, a panel of experts awards the prestigious Grifo d'Oroโthe heraldic symbol of Lucignanoโto the most original float that best captures the theme.
The parade traditionally concludes with the passage of the 'carroccio' (the village's civic symbol) and a spectacular flower battle, where the crowd is showered in petals. The narrow streets and arches of the historic center are adorned with floral arrangements, blooming balconies, and decorations that turn Lucignano into an authentic open-air garden.
The parades are part of the broader Settimana Maggiolina (Maggiolina Week), which brings the village to life for several days with food stalls, typical Valdichiana products, exhibitions, evening shows, and festivities in the historic center. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Lucignano, one of the most beautiful villages in the province of Arezzo, and to enjoy the food and wine of this corner of Tuscany.
For the residents of Lucignano, the Maggiolata is much more than a parade: it is a tradition that involves entire families for months in the construction of the floats, fueling a healthy rivalry between the districts and passing the art of floral design from generation to generation. A popular festival that attracts thousands of visitors to the heart of Tuscany every year.
The 87th edition of the Maggiolata Lucignanese featured the theme 'The Olympic Games: between antiquity and modernity', interpreted by the village's four districts with traditional floats covered in over 100,000 fresh flowers.
The main parades were held on Sunday, May 31 (daytime parade), Monday, June 1 (night parade), and Sunday, June 7, 2026 (final parade and awards ceremony). The first day saw nearly 7,000 attendees, a record start for the event. On May 31, the 'Treno dei Fiori' historic train from Arezzo was also organized.
The Grifo d'Oro was awarded to the Porta San Giusto district, further cementing its place in the festival's history.
Main parades of the 87th edition:
Throughout the Maggiolina Week: food stalls, typical Valdichiana products, shows, and side events in the historic center.
By Car: Lucignano can be reached via the A1 motorway, taking the Valdichiana/Bettolle-Sinalunga exit and following signs to the village. During parade days, it is recommended to use the parking lots outside the historic center.
By Train: The nearest stations are Arezzo and Sinalunga, from where you can continue by car or local connections. In some years, the 'Treno dei Fiori' (Flower Train) is organized, a historic train departing from Arezzo towards the Valdichiana.
Admission to the parade days requires a ticket. For updated rates, schedules, and advance sales, please consult the official website and the event's social media channels.
We recommend arriving early to secure a spot along the route, wearing comfortable shoes for the village's cobblestone streets, and taking advantage of the food stalls to sample typical Valdichiana products.
