The Nativity and ancient crafts come alive in the illuminated alleys of the Modena Apennines
The Living Nativity of Fiumalbo is one of the most cherished events of the Christmas season in the municipality of Fiumalbo, in the province of Modena, in the heart of Alto Frignano. The first performance dates back to 1958; after a long break, the tradition was revived in 1984 on the initiative of the local historical photographer Mario "Becca" Serafini, with annual editions until 1989 and then on a biennial basis. It is precisely this two-year cycle that makes the wait so intense for residents and visitors alike.
As evening falls, the historic village of Fiumalbo is lit only by the glow of bonfires, candles, and torches: modern signs are turned off, and the alleys in the shadow of the Rocca go back in time. Along the route, which winds through the narrow streets of the center and crosses Piazza Iolanda with its large fir tree, about forty scenic tableaux come to life, animated by over 200 participants, all residents of the village.
The heart of the event is the reenactment of the ancient crafts of the Apennines: the stonemason, the carpenter, the pork butcher, the knife sharpener, the chair caner, and the blacksmith work before the spectators as they did in the past. Alongside them are scenes of daily life, the school of yesteryear, Roman soldiers, and matrons, culminating in the central representation of the Nativity, set up outdoors in the heart of the village.
The Living Nativity is a collective work that involves the entire community of Fiumalbo: families, volunteers, and associations provide spaces, costumes, and time to reconstruct every detail. Some performers have been playing the same role for decades, a sign of a deep connection with this tradition. The event is organized by the Committee for the Nativity Scene together with Fiumalbo Events, under the patronage of the Municipality of Fiumalbo, and attracts several thousand visitors each edition, contributing to the recognition of one of the most beautiful villages in the Modena Apennines and Emilia-Romagna.
The Living Nativity of Fiumalbo returned for the 2025/2026 edition with its evocative reenactment along the streets of the Alto Frignano village. The evenings of January 3 and 4, 2026, scheduled approximately from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, completed the cycle opened on Christmas Eve and attracted about 6,000 visitors. As per tradition, over 200 resident participants brought to life about 40 scenic tableaux, showcasing ancient mountain crafts, scenes of daily life, and the Nativity reenactment around 10:00 PM, followed by the adoration procession.
Among the performers on January 3: Renzo Nizzi as Joseph (a role he has held since 1991-92), Gemma Amidei as Mary, and little Virginia Berti as the baby Jesus.
Fiumalbo is located in Alto Frignano, in the province of Modena. By car, it can be reached from the SS12 dell'Abetone and del Brennero; the nearest train stations are on the Modena-Pistoia line. On event days, the village is closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in the designated areas at the entrance to the village and proceed on foot.
The reenactments take place in the evening, approximately from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with the Nativity scene around 10:00 PM. Admission is free.
The event is held outdoors in mid-winter and at high altitude: wear very warm clothing, comfortable shoes suitable for cobbled alleys, and waterproof footwear in case of snow. For information, contact the Fiumalbo tourist office at 0536 73922.
