About Living Nativity

Every two years, on the days between Christmas and Epiphany, the medieval village of Fiumalbo transforms into a large open-air nativity scene. Over 200 participants, all residents of the village, reenact the Nativity and ancient mountain crafts along streets lit only by bonfires, candles, and torches. Forty scenic tableaux depict life in the past in the Alto Frignano area, in a suspended atmosphere that draws thousands of visitors to the Modena Apennines.

A Living Nativity Scene Among the Oldest in the Modena Apennines

The Living Nativity of Fiumalbo is one of the most cherished events of the Christmas season in the municipality of Fiumalbo, in the province of Modena, in the heart of Alto Frignano. The first performance dates back to 1958; after a long break, the tradition was revived in 1984 on the initiative of the local historical photographer Mario "Becca" Serafini, with annual editions until 1989 and then on a biennial basis. It is precisely this two-year cycle that makes the wait so intense for residents and visitors alike.

The Village That Becomes a Stage

As evening falls, the historic village of Fiumalbo is lit only by the glow of bonfires, candles, and torches: modern signs are turned off, and the alleys in the shadow of the Rocca go back in time. Along the route, which winds through the narrow streets of the center and crosses Piazza Iolanda with its large fir tree, about forty scenic tableaux come to life, animated by over 200 participants, all residents of the village.

Ancient Mountain Crafts

The heart of the event is the reenactment of the ancient crafts of the Apennines: the stonemason, the carpenter, the pork butcher, the knife sharpener, the chair caner, and the blacksmith work before the spectators as they did in the past. Alongside them are scenes of daily life, the school of yesteryear, Roman soldiers, and matrons, culminating in the central representation of the Nativity, set up outdoors in the heart of the village.

A Choral and Identity Tradition

The Living Nativity is a collective work that involves the entire community of Fiumalbo: families, volunteers, and associations provide spaces, costumes, and time to reconstruct every detail. Some performers have been playing the same role for decades, a sign of a deep connection with this tradition. The event is organized by the Committee for the Nativity Scene together with Fiumalbo Events, under the patronage of the Municipality of Fiumalbo, and attracts several thousand visitors each edition, contributing to the recognition of one of the most beautiful villages in the Modena Apennines and Emilia-Romagna.

Living Nativity — edition 2026

The 2025/2026 edition of the Living Nativity of Fiumalbo took place in the historic village with the usual biennial cadence: after the Christmas Eve performance, the reenactments on Saturday, January 3, and Friday, January 4, 2026, drew about 6,000 visitors. Over 200 participants animated forty scenic tableaux featuring ancient crafts, biblical scenes, and the Nativity, along streets lit by bonfires and torches.

The Living Nativity of Fiumalbo returned for the 2025/2026 edition with its evocative reenactment along the streets of the Alto Frignano village. The evenings of January 3 and 4, 2026, scheduled approximately from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, completed the cycle opened on Christmas Eve and attracted about 6,000 visitors. As per tradition, over 200 resident participants brought to life about 40 scenic tableaux, showcasing ancient mountain crafts, scenes of daily life, and the Nativity reenactment around 10:00 PM, followed by the adoration procession.
