Between memory and celebration in the piazza, the anniversary of the Liberation
In San Donato Milanese, in the province of Milan, the anniversary of the Liberation is a day that intertwines two souls: the solemnity of institutional ceremonies and the vibrancy of a piazza celebration. It honors those who fought against fascism and, at the same time, creates a moment of celebration for the entire community. This is how April 25th, every year, brings together memory and social life.
The day opens with a commemorative journey through the city's symbolic places. It begins in the hamlet of Poasco, with the laying of a wreath at the monument to the fallen, continuing to via Parri with a tribute to the mural dedicated to Giuseppe Di Vittorio. This is followed by the ceremony at the bust of Enrico Mattei at the Primo Palazzo Uffici, and finally, the solemn moment at the Monument to the Resistance in front of the Town Hall, with the Banda Mascagni and the ANPI choir.
After remembrance, the celebration. In the evening, the theatrical performance 'Fiori caduti a primavera', curated by the InDialogo association, takes place, followed by a concert by Mefisto Brass, a band that performs techno-inspired compositions played exclusively with wind instruments and percussion. To close, a DJ set by Sando Calling, with catering services provided by the Red Cross and Sando Calling itself. This is the young and popular face of a civil occasion that in San Donato never renounces the celebration.
Promoted by the Municipality of San Donato Milanese with the involvement of ANPI and local associations, the Liberation Day on April 25th is one of the most important civil events of the year. Bringing together the solemnity of commemorations and the energy of the piazza is the way the city conveys the meaning of the Resistance and the freedom won to new generations.
The 2026 edition of the Liberation Day Festival in San Donato Milanese celebrates the 81st anniversary. The morning follows the commemorative route through the places of remembrance; the evening gives way to celebration with theater, music, and a DJ set.
