Edition 2025 — La Mascra

The 2025 edition of La Mascra took place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, the last Sunday of Carnival, through the streets of the historic center of Castiglione Messer Marino. The traditional carnival mask procession featured "lu Pulgenella" with his imposing cappìlle, amidst dances, cowbells, and burlesque scenes, drawing visitors from neighboring towns in Abruzzo and Molise.

La Mascra 2025 in Castiglione Messer Marino

On Sunday, March 2, 2025, the last Sunday of Carnival, the village of Castiglione Messer Marino (Chieti) renewed the ritual of La Mascra, the historic carnival mask procession. "lu Pulgenella", a local variation of Pulcinella, paraded through the streets of the old town wearing conical headdresses up to a meter high, belts of cowbells, and "scrujazze". The procession, composed of local men also dressed as women, enlivened the day with circular dances and burlesque scenes, in an atmosphere that confirms every year the archaic nature of this Apennine tradition, a candidate for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
