Independent music, art, and experimentation at Cinema Elio in Calimera
The Keaton Dust Fest is a traveling showcase of independent music and underground artistic productions that, each season, chooses the Cinema Elio in Calimera — a small town in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Grecìa Salentina — as its home in lower Salento. Born in 2024, the festival takes its name and spirit from Buster Keaton, an icon of silent cinema and a symbol of silent, rebellious art, to tell the story of the dust that rises when less visible musical scenes finally find a stage.
The Keaton Dust Fest formula is that of a long, multidisciplinary evening that weaves together multiple languages. It starts in the late afternoon with the opening of the bar area and vinyl selections, then moves to the visual section with a documentary screening, and finally to live concerts by the bands. The result is a surprising, grassroots dialogue between new sonic experiences and established groups, spanning art rock, space rock, noise, post-punk, hardcore, doom, and electronic experimentation.
Much more than just a concert, the festival is a cultural project that aims to promote the underground musical scenes of Puglia. The screenings trace the history of the Apulian underground — from the eighties and nineties to today — and the independent fanzines presented during the evenings tell a story made of self-productions, collectives, and small local entities. It is a festival built entirely from the ground up, with the Do It Yourself spirit that has always characterized the Salento alternative scene.
Keaton Dust Fest is organized by a network of cultural entities from Salento and Puglia, including Divagare (Lecce), Mujmunè (Leverano), the Cinema Elio in Calimera, and the Sumkm97 collective. The collaboration between these associations allows the festival to maintain a traveling character and renew itself with every edition, while remaining faithful to an affordable, accessible entry price.
The spring 2026 stop of the Keaton Dust Fest animated the Cinema Elio in Calimera on Friday, April 17, 2026, with a packed program that combined cinema, independent publishing, and live concerts. The event confirmed itself as one of the most anticipated moments of the Salento underground scene, with the now customary affordable entry price of 5 euros.
The heart of the visual section was the screening of the short version of the documentary Polvere e Corrente, dedicated to the Apulian musical scenes of the eighties and nineties, followed by a dialogue with the protagonists. During the evening, Thatsazine was also presented, an independent fanzine dedicated to the local underground music scene.
The highlights of the edition: the screening of the documentary Polvere e Corrente on the Apulian music scenes of the 80s-90s with a dialogue with the protagonists, and the live performances of five local independent bands, from the post-rock of Loovenchantrex to the street punk of Beta 36.
Keaton Dust Fest is held at the Cinema Elio, at Via Montinari 32 in Calimera (LE), in the Grecìa Salentina. Calimera is located a few kilometers from Lecce and is easily accessible by car along the provincial roads of lower Salento.
By car from Lecce, take the SP road towards Martano/Calimera (about 20 minutes). The nearest train station served by Ferrovie del Sud Est is Calimera, on the Lecce–Gallipoli/Zollino line.
Affordable entry (5 euros in recent editions). The evenings begin in the late afternoon with the opening of the bar area and continue until late at night with live concerts.
