A week of Jamaican culture in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Jamit Fest, officially the Jamaican Culture Week, is a widespread event that transforms Salento into a cultural bridge to the Caribbean island every summer. The festival was established in 2024 by the Jamit Cultural Association, a Salento-Jamaican initiative founded by Joan "Nanook" Webley, an artist and cultural activist originally from Kingston who has lived in Puglia for years. For one week, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, sound systems, food, and music showcase the history and identity of Jamaica, the home of reggae.
Jamit Fest has no single venue: it is a travelling festival involving dozens of towns across Salento and the province of Lecce. Its cultural hub is the Jamaica House, a pop-up embassy featuring exhibitions on the history of Jamaican music, workshops, DJ sets, language exchanges, and fusion cuisine. Alongside this, the Sound System Village in San Donato di Lecce hosts the grand evening concert at the Parco dello Sport, della Musica e della Cultura, which draws thousands of enthusiasts from all over Puglia every year.
The program encompasses many forms of expression: reggae and dancehall concerts, sound system sessions, dub poetry workshops, dancehall lessons, patois language courses, Caribbean film festivals, and fusion cuisine tastings. The festival is supported by the Jamaica Tourist Board, various consulates, and the Puglia Region, reflecting the deeply rooted cultural bond between Salento and Jamaica.
Having grown rapidly since its first edition in 2024, Jamit Fest has become a highly anticipated event of the Salento summer, blending entertainment, cultural insight, and international exchange. In San Donato di Lecce, the festival has found one of its natural homes, with the Parco dello Sport serving as the stage for major live performances. Dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: the event is traditionally held during the first week of August.
Details for the 2026 edition of Jamit Fest have not yet been made public. The Jamaican Culture Week traditionally takes place during the first week of August, involving San Donato di Lecce and numerous towns in Salento with concerts, sound systems, cinema, workshops, and fusion cuisine. The official dates and program will be announced by the Jamit Cultural Association in the weeks leading up to the event.
San Donato di Lecce is located in the heart of Salento, about 15 km from Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 and the provincial roads connecting the regional capital. The nearest train station is in Lecce, served by the Trenitalia network; from there, you can continue by local bus or taxi. The reference airport is Brindisi-Salento, located about 50 km away.
The main events of Jamit Fest, including the evening concert at the Parco dello Sport in San Donato di Lecce, are traditionally free of charge. Information regarding dates and the program is published by the Jamit association closer to the event.
As this is a widespread event held across multiple towns in Salento, it is advisable to check the program to plan your travel. During the summer months, it is recommended to book your accommodation well in advance, given the high tourist season in Salento.
