Bavarian beer, Italian cuisine, and live music in Piazza del Popolo, Fermo
For four evenings, the picturesque Piazza del Popolo in Fermo, the heart of the historic center in the Province of Fermo (Marche), transforms into a grand open-air lounge dedicated to beer and friendship between peoples. The Italo-German Beer Festival was created to celebrate the twinning between Fermo and Ansbach, a Bavarian city in Franconia with which the Marche municipality has maintained a solid relationship of cultural, social, and economic exchange for years.
The idea is simple and successful: bring the best of both traditions to the square. On one hand, Bavarian beer tapped directly under the arcades; on the other, dishes from Italian cuisine and specialties from the Fermo area. Providing the soundtrack is live music that accompanies each evening, turning the square into a meeting point for residents, families, and visitors.
The opening is marked by the traditional official tapping of the first keg, an unmissable ritual of every beer festival that kicks off the evenings. Food stalls and stands are open from late afternoon until midnight, for a convivial experience that blends Oktoberfest atmospheres with Marche flavors.
The event is much more than just a beer festival; it represents the public moment where Fermo and Ansbach renew a friendship built over time. The event is promoted by the Association Friends of Ansbach together with the Association Friends of Fermo and the Fermano area, with the involvement of city institutions. Amidst Italo-German toasts, gastronomy, and entertainment, the Italo-German Beer Festival has become an anticipated event of the Fermo spring, capable of intertwining the vibrancy of Italian squares with the warm conviviality of German festivals.
The 2026 edition celebrated an important milestone: the twentieth anniversary of the twinning between Fermo and Ansbach. For the occasion, Piazza del Popolo hosted four evenings of celebration from April 9 to 12, featuring Bavarian beer on tap, traditional Italian dishes, and live music.
Alongside the convivial aspect, this edition also had a strong institutional value: the initiative was part of the European project linked to the CERV-2024-Citizens-Town call ("CULTUral and socio-economic twinning Relations Enhancement"), dedicated to strengthening relations between twinned cities.
