About Quintana – La Rivincita

In September, Foligno concludes its Baroque season with La Rivincita, the second joust of the year. The ten knights from the districts return to the Campo de li Giochi to overturn or confirm the outcome of the June Challenge, galloping towards the ring of the God Campo. A historical procession, district taverns, and all the theatricality of 17th-century Foligno animate the historic centre in a duel that awards the second palio of the year.

The second joust of the year

The Giostra della Quintana of Foligno (province of Perugia) is held twice a year. If the June Challenge opens the season, La Rivincita in September closes it: it's the chance for the districts to overturn the June verdict or consolidate their lead, awarding the second annual palio.

From 1613 to today

The origins of the Quintana date back to 1613; the modern version dates from 1946. The race takes place at the Campo de li Giochi, where ten knights, one per district, must spear a ring suspended from the statue of the God Campo along an eight-shaped track. Three rounds, increasingly smaller rings (6 cm, 5.5 cm, 5 cm): the winner is the one who rides fastest without making mistakes.

The ten districts

Ammanniti, Badia, Cassero, Contrastanga, Croce Bianca, Giotti, La Mora, Morlupo, Pugilli, and Spada: these are the ten districts that divide the city and fuel its rivalry, each with its own colours, its own tavern, and its own supporters.

Historical procession and taverns

For La Rivincita too, the evening before the joust, the historic centre hosts the grand historical procession with hundreds of figures in Baroque costumes. In the preceding weeks, the district taverns reopen, where you can enjoy typical Umbrian cuisine. This is the moment that concludes an entire Quintana year of tradition, identity, and civic passion.

Quintana – La Rivincita — edition 2026

La Rivincita 2026 closes the year of the 80th Anniversary of the modern Quintana. Saturday 12 September evening is dedicated to the historical procession through the streets of the centre; Sunday 13 September afternoon, the joust is held at the Campo de li Giochi, awarding the second palio of the year and closing the Quintana season.

La Rivincita 2026 concludes the celebratory year of the 80th Anniversary (1946-2026). After the June Challenge, Foligno's ten districts return to the Campo de li Giochi for the final contest of the year: an afternoon joust that can overturn the hierarchies established in June.

In the preceding weeks, the district taverns reopen with typical Umbrian cuisine, while the historic centre prepares for the grand Baroque procession. For the 80th Anniversary, the awarding of the Guanto della Rivincita (Glove of the Rematch), a new palio symbolising community inclusion, is also planned.
