The medieval village of Gaeta becomes an immersive journey through wine, olive oil, and the flavors of the Gulf
The Gaeta Wine Experience was born in 2025 with a simple yet effective concept: rather than hosting yet another wine fair under a tent, bring the producers directly into the village. The result is an immersive food and wine trail that winds through the medieval heart of Gaeta, in the province of Latina, lower Lazio, where tasting stands pop up in courtyards, shops, and along the alleys descending toward the harbor.
The organizers describe it as an urban ritual that unites the land of vineyards with the salt of the Gulf's sea, and the definition is more than just a marketing slogan: the landscape is as much a part of the experience as the wine itself. You walk, you linger, you move on, and the city reveals itself slowly alongside the wines.
The itinerary unfolds between Via Annunziata and Via Faustina, the two main arteries of the upper old town, starting from the Piazza 19 Maggio area. Along the way, you will encounter over forty exhibitors: selected Italian wineries, local farms, artisanal oil mills showcasing extra virgin olive oils from the surrounding hills, and producers of preserves and typical products from the Pontine coast.
Tastings are not left to chance: visitors are accompanied by professional sommeliers from the main national industry associations, who explain grape varieties, vintages, and pairings. It is a detail that shifts the tone of the evening, making it feel more like an informal masterclass than a simple pour.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Gaeta with the patronage of the Lazio Region, the Chamber of Commerce, and the collaboration of the Pro Loco and Confcommercio Lazio Sud. Mayor Cristian Leccese described it as a showcase for wine excellence and a territorial marketing operation built around the medieval village: the stated goal is to combine the beauty of the old town with the quality of Italian producers.
The formula seems to work. The first edition, in April 2025, recorded significant numbers and a turnout that convinced the organizers to confirm and expand the event in 2026, moving it to May and lengthening the route.
Those arriving for the Wine Experience will find a city that deserves a full day. The medieval district of Sant'Erasmo, the Sanctuary of the Montagna Spaccata, Serapo beach, and the Caboto waterfront are just a few minutes away on foot or by car. The period—between April and May—is among the best of the year on the Gulf: the sea is already clear, temperatures are mild, and the old town is not yet crowded by summer tourism.
For those wishing to delve deeper into the oenological theme, the Pontine territory and the nearby Colli Albani area offer numerous visitable wineries, while the coast between Sperlonga, Formia, and Minturno completes a multi-day itinerary of archaeology, sea, and cuisine.
Following its 2025 debut, the 2026 edition confirmed the immersive trail formula while expanding the route and the number of exhibitors. The public moved freely between the stands set up along Via Annunziata and Via Faustina, glass in hand, meeting wine producers, oil millers, and culinary artisans.
Alongside the tastings, the organization provided a Show Cooking area dedicated to local flavors—from the tiella di Gaeta to seafood and hillside products—and two musical stations with live acts and DJ sets. During the evening, the Palazzo della Cultura and the Cappella d'Oro remained open, two of the most evocative spots in the old town.
The event was promoted by the Municipality of Gaeta with the patronage of the Lazio Region and the Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Pro Loco and Confcommercio Lazio Sud.
By car: from the A1 motorway, take the Cassino exit, then the SS630 to Formia and the SR213 Flacca towards Gaeta; from Rome via the SS148 Pontina and SS7 Appia. Parking is available in areas adjacent to the event and throughout the city.
By train: Formia-Gaeta station on the Rome-Naples line, then local bus to Gaeta (approx. 20 minutes).
Entry ticket €25 including all tastings, food, and beverages; purchase on-site. Updated information at www.gaetawinexperience.it.
The route is on foot over uphill roads and historic paving: comfortable shoes are recommended. Those driving can rely on shuttles and evening public transport services; it is advisable to book accommodation in the city or in Formia for spring weekends, as lodging fills up quickly.
