The great spring bonfire by the sea in Cattolica
The Fogheraccia of Saint Joseph is one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cattolica, a city on the Romagna Riviera in the Province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna. Every year, around March 18th, the free beach of Piazza Primo Maggio becomes the stage for a large bonfire that symbolically burns away the remnants of winter and celebrates the imminent arrival of spring. It is an event that the community still experiences today as a festival, a gathering that brings together children, adults, and the elderly around the warmth of the fire and the scent of the sea.
The March bonfire has its origins in a distant past, where pagan heritage and maritime culture intertwine. In the inland countryside, straw, brushwood, and agricultural waste were burned to encourage the new season; on the coast, fishermen collected logs and wood brought to the beach by winter storms. From this arises the distinctly Adriatic custom of lighting the great bonfire right by the sea. Throughout Romagna, the fogheraccia marked the transition from a cold and rainy season to a warm and fruitful one, coinciding with the feast of Saint Joseph and the celebration of all fathers.
In the past, different neighborhoods of Cattolica competed to build the largest and brightest bonfire, and children ran through the streets collecting wood, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and healthy rivalry between districts. Even today, the event retains this popular spirit: people gather on the beach to watch the flames soar towards the sky, in a moment that is simultaneously a spectacle, a memory, and a convivial gathering.
The magic of the fire is accompanied by the typical flavors of local tradition. Around the bonfire, you can enjoy:
The event takes place under the patronage of the Municipality of Cattolica and is organized by Avis Cattolica along with numerous local entities: the Italian Red Cross of Cattolica, neighborhood committees, the Pura Vida 2.0 and Cattolica per la Tanzania associations, Radio Talpa, and the Civil Protection Association of the city of Cattolica. It is precisely this network of local volunteerism and associations that makes the fogheraccia a deeply communal, free, and open event for everyone.
