The Korean film festival in Florence
The Florence Korea Film Fest is the most important Italian event entirely dedicated to South Korean cinema. Founded in 2003 and organized by the Taegukgi Cultural Association under the direction of Riccardo Gelli, the festival takes place every year in Florence, in the heart of Tuscany, and has turned the Tuscan capital into one of the European benchmarks for the promotion of Korean cinematic culture.
The festival's headquarters is the Cinema La Compagnia, on Via Cavour, the Region of Tuscany's art-house cinema located just a few steps from the Duomo and the Santa Maria Novella station. This is the hub for screenings, meetings, and special events, while part of the program is also made available online via the MYmovies platform, extending the festival's reach well beyond the borders of the Municipality of Florence.
Each edition features over 70 titles, organized into thematic sections ranging from major commercial hits to independent cinema, and from documentaries to short films. Historical sections include Korean Horizons, dedicated to the best of recent production, K-Cinema Today, focusing on contemporary cinema, and Short, Shorts!, reserved for short films. All screenings are in the original language with subtitles, a choice that reflects the event's cultural rather than purely popular vocation.
The festival is more than just screenings: every year, it welcomes Korean directors, actors, producers, and illustrators to Florence, who take part in public meetings, masterclasses, and tributes. Over the years, the festival has paid homage to some of the most beloved names in Korean cinema, helping to introduce Italian audiences to authors and performers who have captivated global viewers through films and series that have become worldwide phenomena.
For fans of Asian cinema, those curious about K-culture, and anyone who simply loves discovering different stories and perspectives, the Florence Korea Film Fest is an unmissable opportunity. It is a festival that combines the rigor of cinephile programming with the charm of an art city like Florence, during a time of yearโspringโwhen the Tuscan capital is particularly beautiful to experience.
The 24th edition of the Florence Korea Film Fest presented over 70 South Korean films in Florence, welcoming twelve industry figures including directors, actors, producers, and illustrators. The festival, structured into the sections Korean Horizons, K-Cinema Today, and Short, Shorts!, confirmed its role as the leading Italian showcase for K-cinema.
Among the most anticipated moments were the tribute to actor Gong Yoo and the retrospective dedicated to director Yeon Sang-ho, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Train to Busan. The screenings, all in the original language with subtitles, were accompanied by masterclasses, meetings with the authors, and a live musical event.
All screenings were in the original language with subtitles. Full program at koreafilmfest.com.
The Cinema La Compagnia is located at Via Cavour 50/r in Florence, a short distance from the Florence Santa Maria Novella train station (about a 10-minute walk) and the main urban bus lines. Those arriving by car can use the city center parking lots, but public transport is recommended due to the ZTL (limited traffic zone) in the historic center.
Tickets for individual screenings and any passes can be purchased at the Cinema La Compagnia box office and, when available, online. Part of the program can also be enjoyed via streaming on the MYmovies platform. For updated rates and accreditation, please check the official website koreafilmfest.com.
Screenings with guests and masterclasses tend to fill up quickly: it is advisable to arrive early or book in advance. March in Florence is also the ideal time to combine a visit to the festival with exploring the city.
