The Japanese Tanabata in Piazzetta degli Artisti, featuring tanzaku, storytelling, and workshops
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Festival of the Stars is the event through which Atripalda, a town in the province of Avellino in Campania, brings Tanabata, the traditional Japanese festival of the star-crossed lovers, to the public square. For one night, the intimate Piazzetta degli Artisti, located in the town center just a short walk from the Town Hall, turns into a corner of Japan: bamboo branches, colorful paper strips, and an audience of families, young people, and curious visitors gather at sunset, when the light fades and the square becomes a cozy, intimate space.
The heart of the event is the tanzaku ritual. Following Japanese tradition, participants receive a strip of colored paper on which to write a wish, a thought, or a prayer; the note is then hung on bamboo branches set up in the square, in the hope that the stars will grant it. It is a simple yet engaging gesture that, within a few hours, turns the branches into a cascade of colorful paper and makes the square a small collective work of art. The name Tanabata literally means "seventh night" and is linked to the cycle of the seasons, the night sky, and the idea that for wishes to come true, they must first be written down.
Around the wish ritual, the evening builds a journey of discovery into the culture of the Land of the Rising Sun, designed for both adults and children. The program specifically includes:
The approach is typical of reading promotion activities: not just simple entertainment, but an invitation to travel with the imagination through stories, images, and gestures of a distant culture, made accessible to those who are unfamiliar with it.
The Festival of the Stars is promoted by the Lupus in Fabula association, active in Atripalda with cultural proposals aimed primarily at children and families, with the support of the Municipality of Atripalda and in collaboration with Laika, a local organization involved in artistic and photographic projects. It is an example of the grassroots cultural planning that has enlivened the Piazzetta degli Artisti in recent years, a reclaimed urban space that has become one of the symbolic landmarks of Atripalda's community life.
Atripalda lies along the Sabato river, at the gates of Avellino, and preserves the traces of ancient Abellinum, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Irpinia. In recent years, the city has built a dense summer calendar, consisting of musical reviews, guided tours, book presentations, and events for children, which animate squares and courtyards from June to September. In this context, the Festival of the Stars represents the most unusual note: a low-cost, visually striking event that brings an exotic imagery to a provincial historic center and invites the public to participate rather than just watch.
The event is designed for a broad, intergenerational audience: families with children, groups of friends, couples, and individual visitors. The location is easily accessible, and the short, evening format is perfect for a stop on a summer night, perhaps combined with a walk through the center of Atripalda. Those arriving from outside Irpinia can include the evening in a wider itinerary between Avellino, the archaeological area of Abellinum, and the villages of the Sabato valley.
At the time of writing, no official date has been published for the 2026 edition of the Festival of the Stars (Tanabata) in Atripalda, in the province of Avellino. The reference indicated is purely indicative and reflects the period in which the initiative was held in the past, i.e., the second half of July.
The program is also not yet known: no times, details on the creative workshop, or information on any booking requirements have been released. Previous editions were held in Piazzetta degli Artisti by the Lupus in Fabula association, with the support of the Municipality of Atripalda and in collaboration with Laika.
To find out if and when the 2026 edition will take place, it is advisable to follow the organizers' social media channels, the events section of the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, and the local Irpinian press, where the announcement usually appears a few days before the evening.

Lupus in Fabula Association — [email protected]. Updates on dates and the program are shared on the organizers' social media channels and on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino.
Bring a pen to write your tanzaku and arrive early: the square is small and fills up quickly during the peak hours of the evening. In July, Irpinian evenings are pleasant, but a light sweater might be useful after sunset.
