Ancient music in the Christmas of Pavia and its surroundings
The Festival di Natale del Centro di Musica Antica Ghislieri is the event that, every December, enlivens the Christmas period in Pavia, the capital of its province in Lombardy. Born in 2015, it has become a fixture of the city's cultural calendar, an expression of GhislieriMusica, an entity linked to the Ghislieri College that has brought Pavia to the center of the European early music scene.
The festival's philosophy is based on two principles: supporting young emerging artists and ensuring widespread access to music. For this reason, the events are not concentrated in one place but are distributed between Pavia (with venues such as the Castello Visconteo and the Salone San Pio), Vigevano, and the Certosa di Pavia, reaching out with small concerts to care facilities in the area, to bring music even to those who cannot travel.
The protagonists are often Italian and European emerging ensembles, supported through the European project EEEmerging+, of which GhislieriMusica is a partner. Young groups specializing in Baroque repertoire and early music find a prestigious stage here, in a dialogue between tradition and new generations of performers.
Among the most evocative moments is the Gregorian mass celebrated at the Certosa di Pavia, a masterpiece of Lombard architecture, with the Schola Gregoriana Ghislieri. A spiritual and musical experience that embodies the spirit of the festival: uniting the great music of the past, the symbolic places of the territory, and the sense of community typical of Christmas.
The Festival di Natale del Centro di Musica Antica Ghislieri 2026 returns in December to enliven Pavia's Christmas, following the model of the previous edition held from December 3 to 14. A widespread festival, it intertwines the city and its surroundingsโPavia, Vigevano, the Certosa di Paviaโwith concerts entrusted to emerging Italian and European ensembles supported by the EEEmerging+ project. Among the highlights is the evocative Gregorian mass at the Certosa di Pavia with the Schola Gregoriana Ghislieri. The exact dates and detailed program will be announced by GhislieriMusica in the weeks preceding the event.
The complete program will be published by GhislieriMusica.
Pavia is connected to Milan by train (about 30 minutes) and by car via the A7 motorway. Concerts are held in various venues in Pavia and the surrounding area; the Certosa di Pavia can be reached by train and car.
The festival takes place in December, with concerts in multiple venues. Access methods and tickets vary according to individual events, through the GhislieriMusica channels.
