About Festival dell'Appennino

The Festival dell'Appennino stops in Montemonaco, a small village in the Sibillini Mountains in the province of Ascoli Piceno. A day entirely dedicated to families, inclusion, and nature, with an accessible excursion, theatrical performances, workshops for children, and the discovery of the artistic heritage saved after the 2016 earthquake. A free event that combines walking, culture, and legends of the Sibyl, immersed in the unique scenery of the central Marche Apennines.

The Festival dell'Appennino in Montemonaco

The Festival dell'Appennino is the major traveling exhibition that, every year from May to October, crosses the villages of the central Apennines affected by the 2016-2017 earthquake, spread across Marche, Abruzzo, Lazio, and Umbria. Organized by BIM Tronto (Bacino Imbrifero Montano del Tronto), the festival combines excursions, theater, music, contemporary circus, and cultural meetings to tell the story of and revitalize the high inland areas. The Montemonaco stage, a municipality in the Province of Ascoli Piceno nestled in the Monti Sibillini National Park, is one of the most anticipated events on the Marche calendar.

A village for families

In Montemonaco, the festival focuses on the theme of inclusion and family: a day designed to be enjoyed by everyone, without barriers. The highlight of the morning is an inclusive excursion of about four kilometers along the Monti-Guarnieri Park, also accessible to people with special needs thanks to the jolettes, the off-road wheelchairs that allow one to tackle mountain trails. Upon return, the village comes alive with performances, creative workshops, and entertainment for adults and children.

Between sacred art and Sibylline legends

The afternoon is dedicated to the territory's culture with the project "Oltre il Cratere" (Beyond the Crater), hosted at the Museo Sistino di Arte Sacra (Sistine Museum of Sacred Art) in Montemonaco: a journey through the artworks saved after the earthquake and now housed in the museum. The day concludes with theater and magic, featuring clown shows and storytelling inspired by the legends of the Sibillini Mountains, from Guerin Meschino to the fairy Sibyl, mythical figures who have inhabited the imagination of this corner of the Apennines for centuries.

Why it's worth participating

  • A free and accessible event, perfect for families with children.
  • Excursions in the Monti Sibillini National Park, among the most beautiful landscapes of the Marche region.
  • Theatrical performances, workshops, and circus and storytelling activities.
  • The rediscovery of the cultural heritage of a village that is a symbol of post-earthquake rebirth.

Montemonaco thus becomes, for a day, a natural stage where walking, art, and tradition meet in the name of the mountains and the community.
