The Montemonaco stage in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains
The Festival dell'Appennino is the major traveling exhibition that, every year from May to October, crosses the villages of the central Apennines affected by the 2016-2017 earthquake, spread across Marche, Abruzzo, Lazio, and Umbria. Organized by BIM Tronto (Bacino Imbrifero Montano del Tronto), the festival combines excursions, theater, music, contemporary circus, and cultural meetings to tell the story of and revitalize the high inland areas. The Montemonaco stage, a municipality in the Province of Ascoli Piceno nestled in the Monti Sibillini National Park, is one of the most anticipated events on the Marche calendar.
In Montemonaco, the festival focuses on the theme of inclusion and family: a day designed to be enjoyed by everyone, without barriers. The highlight of the morning is an inclusive excursion of about four kilometers along the Monti-Guarnieri Park, also accessible to people with special needs thanks to the jolettes, the off-road wheelchairs that allow one to tackle mountain trails. Upon return, the village comes alive with performances, creative workshops, and entertainment for adults and children.
The afternoon is dedicated to the territory's culture with the project "Oltre il Cratere" (Beyond the Crater), hosted at the Museo Sistino di Arte Sacra (Sistine Museum of Sacred Art) in Montemonaco: a journey through the artworks saved after the earthquake and now housed in the museum. The day concludes with theater and magic, featuring clown shows and storytelling inspired by the legends of the Sibillini Mountains, from Guerin Meschino to the fairy Sibyl, mythical figures who have inhabited the imagination of this corner of the Apennines for centuries.
Montemonaco thus becomes, for a day, a natural stage where walking, art, and tradition meet in the name of the mountains and the community.
The Montemonaco stage of the 17th edition of the Festival dell'Appennino took place on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, with the title "A village for families", a day entirely dedicated to inclusion, families, and the valorization of the territory. From the accessible excursion in the morning to the theatrical performances in the afternoon, the event combined nature, culture, and Sibylline legends in the Municipality of Montemonaco, in the Province of Ascoli Piceno.
Montemonaco is located in the Province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Monti Sibillini National Park. By car, it can be reached from the SS4 Salaria and then from the internal roads towards the upper Aso Valley. The nearest train stations are Ascoli Piceno and San Benedetto del Tronto, from which you can continue by car.
Participation in all activities is free, but booking is required through the official website festivaldellappennino.it. For the excursion with jolettes and for special needs, contact +39 370 1567741.
Wear trekking shoes and layered clothing: the climate can change quickly at high altitudes. Bring water and a hat for outdoor activities.
