A stopover with hiking in the Sibillini Mountains and a show in the village, in the heart of the Fermo area
The Festival dell'Appennino is the travelling exhibition that every year, from May to October, brings culture, music, theatre, and hiking to the villages of the central Apennines affected by the 2016 earthquake. Promoted by the Consorzio BIM Tronto together with the Commissioner's Office for the 2016 Earthquake Reconstruction, the festival aims to be a real intervention for the economic and social rebirth of the crater territories. Among the many municipalities involved is Montefortino, a small and charming village in the Province of Fermo overlooking the Sibillini Mountains, in the Marche region.
Each stage of the festival follows a tried-and-tested format, much loved by the public: in the afternoon, there's a guided excursion along the mountain trails, discovering spectacular landscapes, hermitages, and gorges; in the evening, in the village square, a show takes place — a concert, reading, or theatrical performance — often accompanied by moments dedicated to food and wine and local typical products. In Montefortino, the heart of the evening events is the central Piazza Umberto I, while the excursions typically lead towards the famous Gole dell'Infernaccio (Hell's Gorges), the hermitage of San Leonardo, and the peaks surrounding the village.
For the 17th edition in 2026, titled "A due passi da te" (A stone's throw from you), the Festival dell'Appennino offers 31 events in 29 municipalities spread across Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, and Lazio, from May 3rd to October 31st. The Montefortino stop is scheduled for Friday, August 21st, 2026, and features Piero Massimo Macchini, an actor, entertainer, and clown from Fermo, known for his visual comedy and mime shows performed on five continents.
Listed among the most characteristic villages of the Fermo area, Montefortino is a gateway to the Sibillini Mountains National Park. Its historic centre, the civic art gallery, and its proximity to the Gole dell'Infernaccio make it an ideal destination for those seeking nature and culture combined. The festival stop is the perfect opportunity to combine a mountain hike with an evening of entertainment, in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Marche region.
Participation in all Festival dell'Appennino events is free, but online booking is required on the official website festivaldellappennino.it, especially for the excursions, which have a limited number of participants and require good hiking fitness.
The Festival dell'Appennino returns to Montefortino (FM) on Friday, August 21st, 2026, with the usual format that combines hiking and shows. The evening's performance is entrusted to Piero Massimo Macchini, an actor, clown, and entertainer from Fermo, one of the most original voices of comedy in the Marche region. The event is part of the 17th edition of the festival, titled "A due passi da te" (A stone's throw from you), which from May to October travels through the villages of the seismic crater in Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, and Lazio. As every year, participation is free with mandatory booking on the official website.
Evening's protagonist: Piero Massimo Macchini, actor and entertainer from Fermo.
According to the established format of the Festival dell'Appennino, the day includes an afternoon guided excursion in the Sibillini Mountains followed by an evening show in the historic centre of Montefortino. Precise times, meeting point, and details of the hiking route will be published on the official website festivaldellappennino.it in the weeks preceding the event.
Montefortino (FM) can be reached by car from the SS4 Salaria or the Ascoli–Mare dual carriageway, exiting towards the hinterland in the direction of the Sibillini Mountains. The nearest train station is Amandola/Pedaso; the village is not served directly by train, so a car is the most convenient means of transport.
Free entry to all events. Mandatory online booking on the website festivaldellappennino.it, particularly for the excursion.
For the excursion, hiking boots, layered clothing, water, and good physical condition are recommended: the trails in the Sibillini Mountains are of an intermediate hiking level. For the evening show in Piazza Umberto I, a light jacket is advisable for mountain evenings in August.
