About Sant'Erasmo

Every last Sunday of July, Arma di Taggia celebrates Sant'Erasmo, protector of sailors and the seaside village. Two days of music, tradition, and devotion culminate in the evocative procession along the seafront and a grand fireworks display over the sea. Featuring concerts, a solemn mass, a fair, and the laying of a laurel wreath to "Sant'Erasmo of the abyss," the festival combines the religious devotion of the seafaring community with the joy of the Ligurian summer, in one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Riviera dei Fiori.

The patron saint of sailors

The Festeggiamenti di Sant'Erasmo (Celebrations of Saint Erasmus) is the most cherished event of the summer in Arma di Taggia, a coastal hamlet of the municipality of Taggia in the province of Imperia. Sant'Erasmo is the protector of sailors, and the festival celebrates the village's deep connection with the sea.

Two days of celebration

The programme typically spans Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is dedicated to music, with concerts such as those by the Sanremo Symphony Orchestra, and religious observances. Sunday is the main day: the laying of a laurel wreath at sea in memory of those lost at sea ("Sant'Erasmo of the abyss"), the solemn mass, and the grand procession along the seafront, accompanied by the town band.

Fireworks over the sea

The grand finale is the evening fireworks display, with pyrotechnics illuminating the sea of Arma di Taggia. Amidst the fair, stalls, and widespread festivities, the event draws residents and tourists, confirming itself as one of the most beloved summer events on the Riviera dei Fiori.
