The third Sunday of September the city celebrates its patron saint
In San Donato Milanese, in the province of Milan, the patron saint is also the city's namesake: San Donato Vescovo e Martire (Saint Donatus Bishop and Martyr). This is why the Festa Patronale, scheduled for the third Sunday of September, holds a special identity value. Two days where the religious, civil, and popular dimensions intertwine, animating the historic city center.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn mass celebrated on Sunday morning in the church of San Donato Vescovo e Martire, followed in the late afternoon by the traditional procession through the streets of the center. Saturday, however, is the institutional moment: the civic honors ceremony at the Town Hall, during which the administration awards citizens and associations who have distinguished themselves through their commitment to the community.
Alongside the rituals, the festival is above all about piazza life. On Sunday, from morning to evening, the center fills with stalls and an artisan market, workshops and games for children, concerts and musical and sporting performances, street shows, and dog-friendly activities. The Pieve gardens host workshops, guided tours, and social gatherings, while the pedestrian area of Via Jannozzi and the streets of the historic district provide the setting for sports tournaments and entertainment.
The Festa Patronale di San Donato is promoted by the Municipality of San Donato Milanese, often with the involvement of a dedicated committee and local associations. More than a simple religious observance, it is an occasion for the entire city to come together in its squares, rediscovering its roots and sense of belonging in one of the most cherished autumn events in San Donato.
The Festa Patronale di San Donato 2026 returns to its usual mid-September date. Saturday is dedicated to the civic honors ceremony at the Town Hall; on Sunday, from morning to evening, the historic center comes alive with the solemn mass in the church of San Donato Vescovo e Martire, the artisan market, workshops and games for children, concerts, street performances, and the afternoon procession.
The exact date and full program will be announced by the Municipality of San Donato Milanese in the preceding weeks. A dedicated committee for the patron saint's festival is also active on the official channels.
