The Festa di San Martino is the patronal festival of Treviso Bresciano, a municipality in Valle Sabbia, in the province of Brescia. On November 11th, the town celebrates Saint Martin of Tours, the saintly bishop to whom the parish church is dedicated and to whom numerous popular traditions spread throughout Italy are linked.
Between Faith and Autumn Traditions
The heart of the day is the solemn mass in honor of the patron saint. Around the religious celebration, the typical customs of Saint Martin's Day come together, a time that peasant culture considers almost an agricultural New Year: toasts are made with the new wine, chestnuts are enjoyed, and, by tradition, families in Treviso Bresciano celebrate with a spit-roast lunch, as it is the height of the hunting season.
