On June 21st, Castiglione celebrates its patron saint, protector of youth
Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, born in Castiglione delle Stiviere (MN) on March 9, 1568, and died in Rome on June 21, 1591, while assisting plague victims, is the patron saint of the city and the world protector of youth. June 21st, the day of his dies natalis - his "birth to heaven" - is the most heartfelt festival of the year for the community of Castiglione, which gathers around the figure of the young Jesuit in the Basilica-Sanctuary dedicated to him.
The heart of the festival is the solemn Mass, celebrated in the Basilica-Sanctuary, accompanied by the solemn Vespers presided over by the Bishop of Mantua. For the occasion, the Aloisian Historical Museum, which houses relics and memorabilia of the saint, opens its doors extraordinarily, allowing the faithful and visitors to get closer to the story of Saint Aloysius.
Among the most evocative traditions is the Aloisian Infiorata: along Via Ripa Castello, artists and volunteers create floral compositions and en plein air paintings dedicated to the saint, transforming the streets of the center into a carpet of colors. It is a popular and artistic tribute that accompanies the religious celebrations and involves the entire city.
The Festa di San Luigi Gonzaga attracts pilgrims from all over Lombardy and beyond, in a city that identifies deeply with its saint. In 2026, the year of the third centenary of the canonization (Aloisian Year), the anniversary of June 21st is one of the highlights of an extraordinary jubilee year, with celebrations of particular solemnity presided over by high Church officials.
