The patronal festival of Rovello Porro at the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine
The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel is located in Rovello Porro, a municipality in the province of Como, along Via Madonna. Formerly known as Santa Maria della Lura, the building likely dates back to the 13th century as a small rural chapel; the first document certifying its existence is a notarial deed from 1519. Deteriorated over time, the sanctuary was entirely rebuilt in 1925 to a design by the Milanese architect Ugo Zanchetta and solemnly inaugurated in 1935. The main altar houses the wooden statue of the Madonna del Carmine, donated in 1677 by Marquis Cesare Pagani.
Since the 17th century, the Carmelites began to solemnize the feast of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel by carrying the statue of the Madonna in procession: a tradition that is still renewed today on the third Sunday of July. The procession through the streets of the town is the most anticipated and participated moment, the heart of a festival that involves the entire parish community.
The patronal festival is not confined to a single day: for about a week, around the solemnity, Rovello Porro experiences a packed calendar of religious and popular events. In recent editions, the anniversary has been enriched with special moments, such as the historical procession through the town streets and celebrations related to the centenary of the sanctuary's reconstruction.
The Festa della Madonna del Carmine is much more than a liturgical observance: it is the very identity of Rovello Porro, an event that has bound its inhabitants to their sanctuary for centuries. For those who want to discover the most authentic dimension of the Como Brianza region, it is a precious opportunity.
The central moment of the 2026 festival is the procession of the statue of the Madonna del Carmine, which on the third Sunday of July crosses the streets of Rovello Porro according to a tradition dating back to the 17th century. The detailed program, with solemn masses and events of the preceding days, is published by the parish in the weeks leading up to the anniversary.
The complete program for the 2026 patronal festival will be announced by the Parish of San Pietro in Rovello Porro in the weeks prior. The heart of the celebration is the procession of the statue of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, on the third Sunday of July, accompanied by solemn masses at the sanctuary on Via Madonna.
