About Festa dea Lumera

On October 31st, Grantorto, in the Alta Padovana region, revives the Festa dea Lumera, the Venetian tradition of carved and illuminated pumpkins (the "lumere" or "suche baruche") that precedes All Saints' Day. A sort of anti-Halloween that recovers the eve of the Saints with theatrical performances, a pumpkin carving contest, storytelling, and convivial moments, at the El Filò sports facilities. Organized by the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Grantorto, it will reach its 10th edition in 2026.

The night of the lumere in Grantorto

The Festa dea Lumera is the autumn festival of Grantorto, a municipality in the Alta Padovana region, in the province of Padova, in the Cittadella area. It takes place on October 31st, the eve of All Saints' Day, and revives an ancient popular Venetian tradition linked to carved and illuminated pumpkins.

A peasant tradition

The lumere (also called "suche baruche") were hollowed-out and carved pumpkins in which a candle was placed: they were then displayed on windowsills or along ditches, with the belief that they illuminated the path of the souls of the deceased while keeping mischievous spirits away. The eve of All Saints' Day was an occasion to gather, tell stories with an air of mystery, peel chestnuts, and drink wine.

An anti-Halloween that recovers roots

As the municipal administration explains, for some years Grantorto has revived the "festa dea lumèra", a sort of anti-Halloween that reaffirms the local tradition of All Saints' Eve over the imported festival. The program, at the El Filò sports facilities, includes theatrical performances, the pumpkin carving contest, storytelling, and convivial moments. Organized by the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Grantorto, it reaches its 10th edition in 2026.
