The patronal feast of Chiauci, in the heart of Alto Molise
Perched at over 800 meters above sea level, at the entrance to Alto Molise and overlooking the artificial lake of the Trigno river, Chiauci is a tiny village in the province of Isernia that proudly preserves its religious traditions. The most heartfelt is the Feast of the Patron Saint Saint George the Martyr, celebrated every year on April 23rd.
The veneration of Saint George in Chiauci has been documented since the early 18th century, when a venerable lay chapel dedicated to the warrior saint existed in the village. Since then, the community has renewed its bond with the patron saint through a day that intertwines liturgy, memory, and collective identity.
The heart of the feast is the solemn mass in the parish church, followed by the procession that accompanies the statue of the saint through the village streets. It is a moment when the entire village, along with those who return to Chiauci for the occasion, comes together in a rite that spans generations.
Chiauci is part of the territory of the UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo, an area of extraordinary environmental value protected by UNESCO. Visiting the village during the patronal feast means combining the spiritual dimension with the discovery of one of the greenest and most unspoiled areas of Molise, amidst ancient beech forests and mountain silence.
In 2026, Chiauci once again celebrated its patron saint Saint George the Martyr on April 23rd, as reported by the event calendar of the Alto Molise MAB Reserve. The day was structured around a solemn mass and the traditional procession with the statue of the saint through the village streets.
The detailed schedule is announced annually by the parish and the Municipality in the days preceding the feast.
