Feast of the Assumption — Sea Procession in the Porto Grande

The 2025 edition

For Ferragosto 2025, the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption in Syracuse took place according to the usual tradition. After the liturgical celebrations, at 7:00 PM, the statue left the Church of San Filippo Apostolo in the Giudecca district, traveling through the streets and squares of Ortigia to the Marina.

Around 8:00 PM, the sea procession began in the Porto Grande: the statue was embarked on the tugboat "Torre Avolos", accompanied by a procession of boats. Offshore, the blessing of the sea and the prayer for those lost at sea took place, with the casting of a laurel wreath by civil authorities. Before the return, the fireworks display illuminated the harbor waters, and the procession returned to the church around 10:00 PM.
