About Feast of San Dordi

In Sovramonte, in the Belluno area of Feltrino, the Festa de San Dordi renews an ancient vow every April 23rd: the one made to Saint George in 1631 for the end of the plague. Between a solemn mass, a penitential procession with costumed figures, the distribution of the votive bean soup from house to house, and the Palio of Saint George among the four historic districts, it is one of the most authentic and deeply rooted traditions of the Belluno Dolomites.

A vow that has lasted for almost four centuries

The Festa de San Dordi โ€” the feast of Saint George in the Sovramonte dialect โ€” is one of the most heartfelt events in Sovramonte, a municipality in the province of Belluno, in the heart of the Feltrino region. It is celebrated in the hamlet of Sorriva around April 23rd and is rooted in a vow from 1631, when the population turned to Saint George, imploring the end of the plague.

The votive soup and the procession

The central ritual is the votive bean soup: beans are collected from house to house, cared for, and cooked to make a soup that is then distributed house to house by the conscripts โ€” the twenty-year-olds of the village โ€” in traditional Sovramonte costume. Each year, the soup is prepared by different families, in a rotation that involves the entire community. The Sunday following the feast, the penitential procession takes place, with hooded figures (the "cappati") carrying crosses, torches, and banners.

The Palio of Saint George

The religious dimension is complemented by the community and recreational aspect of the Palio of Saint George, the challenge that pits the four historic districts of the village against each other. All this takes place within a festival with a distinctly gastronomic and folkloric flavor, capable of attracting many visitors each year. In recent years, the festival has also been enriched by the Innovation Fair Sovramonte, an exhibition dedicated to robotics, aerospace, and scientific dissemination held concurrently, a sign of a town that cherishes tradition while looking to the future.

Feast of San Dordi โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Festa de San Dordi in Sovramonte renewed the vow of 1631: solemn mass on April 23rd, penitential procession and distribution of the votive bean soup on the following Sunday, with the Palio of Saint George among the districts. Concurrently, the 4th Innovation Fair Sovramonte (April 24-26) surpassed 2,500 visitors.

The 2026 edition of the Festa de San Dordi in Sovramonte confirmed the strength of a tradition that has lasted for almost four centuries. The vow mass was celebrated on April 23rd, followed on the subsequent Sunday by the penitential procession and the distribution of the votive bean soup.

A particularly significant moment was the blessing of the soup, entrusted for the first time in almost four centuries to a foreign priest, Father Vladimir from the diocese of Wroclaw. Concurrently, the 4th Innovation Fair Sovramonte (April 24-26) took place, attracting over 2,500 visitors, with sold-out workshops and the launch of a stratospheric balloon that reached an altitude of 34 km.
