Saint Vitalis and Saint Martial are the patrons of the Municipality of Leno (Province of Brescia), in the Bassa Bresciana. Their feast, set for July 10th, is the main religious event of the town and has roots in an ancient devotion.
A millennial devotion
The cult of Saints Vitalis and Martial in Leno has been documented since the year 1000 by the 11th-century Benedictine-Brescia Sacramentary, under the title "Seven holy brothers". The two martyrs were first venerated in the famous Leonense abbey - one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in Northern Italy - and then in the parish church, where their relics were transferred in 1780. The date of July 10th is also confirmed by the Martyrology promulgated in 2001.
