Gorizia celebrates its patrons
Saints Hilary and Tatian, martyrs linked to the Aquileian tradition, are the patrons of Gorizia. Every year, around March 16th, the city and diocese celebrate them with a program that blends religious moments with civil and cultural initiatives, organized by the Diocese of Gorizia in collaboration with the municipal administration.
The spiritual heart of the feast is the solemnity of March 16th, with the Eucharistic celebration presided over by the archbishop in the Cathedral. In the preceding days, the diocesan community gathers for spiritual exercises and parish assemblies, in a preparatory journey that highlights the bond between the city and its history of faith.
A rich cultural program flourishes around the religious feast: walking tours to discover the ramparts and the Castle district, public meetings with distinguished guests, concerts in the Cathedral, and photographic exhibitions. A particularly significant civil event is the awarding of the "Saints Hilary and Tatian – City of Gorizia" prize, an honor bestowed upon those who have distinguished themselves in service to the community, held at Palazzo de Bassa.
The Feast of the Patrons is an opportunity to rediscover the identity of Gorizia, a border city and a meeting point of cultures. Through solemn liturgies, historical walks, and moments of reflection, the community comes together around its saints and its roots, in a dialogue that unites the sacred and the secular.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saints Hilary and Tatian takes place from March 6 to 16. It opens on March 6th with a walking tour of the ramparts and a meeting with Father Francesco Patton at the Kulturni dom; followed by community spiritual exercises, the "Thanksgiving in Music" concert in the Cathedral, and the parish assembly. The solemnity of March 16th culminates with the Eucharist presided over by Msgr. Redaelli and the awarding of the "Saints Hilary and Tatian – City of Gorizia" prize at Palazzo de Bassa.
