The feast of the patron saint of Foligno, bishop and martyr
Saint Felician, bishop and martyr of the 3rd century, is the patron saint of the city and the Diocese of Foligno (Province of Perugia). His feast day, celebrated on January 24th, is one of the most important moments of the year for the community of Foligno, capable of filling the Cathedral of Saint Felician well beyond expectations, where the silver and gold effigy of the saint is kept at the high altar.
The heart of the feast is the solemn pontifical Mass in the morning, followed in the afternoon by the procession that crosses the historic center, carrying the reliquary bust of the patron saint in a pageant. The day concludes with the evening Mass of Thanksgiving, while the following day a second solemn Mass and the awarding of the "Prize of Goodness" are held.
Civil and military authorities, diocesan clergy, and faithful participate in the celebration, accompanied by the singing of the Schola Cantorum of Santa Cecilia. The Feast of Saint Felician thus unites the religious and civic dimensions, renewing each year the deep bond between Foligno and its protector saint.
The Feast of Saint Felician 2026 took place on January 24th in Foligno. The solemn pontifical Mass in the cathedral was presided over by Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice, Archbishop of Siena and Montepulciano, with the concelebration of Bishops Francesco Massara and Domenico Sorrentino and about fifty diocesan priests.
In the afternoon, the procession of the patron saint took place through the streets of the historic center, followed in the evening by the Mass of Thanksgiving. In his homily, Cardinal Lojudice appealed for peace — "We cannot remain passive spectators. Wars can be stopped" — inviting the faithful to "return to the essential." The cathedral was filled beyond expectations, with civil and military authorities accompanied by the singing of the Schola Cantorum of Santa Cecilia.
The celebrations were preceded by a diocesan preparatory program in the days leading up to the feast.
The Cathedral of Saint Felician overlooks Piazza della Repubblica, in the historic center of Foligno. The city can be reached by train (Rome-Ancona line) and by car from the SS3 Flaminia.
The celebrations are free admission. Program and Mass times are available on the website of the Diocese of Foligno.
