Devotion to the patron saint in the majestic Lucanian Cathedral
Acerenza, a village in the province of Potenza known as the "Cathedral City", annually celebrates its patron saint, Saint Canius Martyr. According to tradition, Canius was persecuted, escaped decapitation in Bizacena (North Africa), and took refuge in Italy, at Atella, where he concluded his life holily. The main feast day falls on May 25th, the day the Saint's relics arrived in the Cathedral of Acerenza.
The heart of the celebrations is the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Saint Canius, a Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece, one of the most imposing in Basilicata. Here is kept the most venerated relic of the Saint, the baculum, the ancient pastoral staff placed under the altar of one of the radial chapels in the ambulatory, in a stone sarcophagus with an opening through which the faithful can glimpse and sometimes touch it.
The festivities are spread over a week. Every evening, starting at 6:00 PM, Holy Mass and the novena dedicated to the Saint are celebrated in the Cathedral. Alongside the religious dimension, the civil program offers concerts, shows, illuminations, and the unmissable band concert that enlivens the streets of the center. The official dressing of the Saint's bearers is one of the most heartfelt moments for the community.
May 25th is the highlight: after the morning masses at the Convent of Sant'Antonio and in the Cathedral, the solemn Holy Mass presided over by the Bishop takes place in the afternoon. This is followed by the procession of the Saint's effigy through the city streets, accompanied by popular devotion and the notes of the band. The evening concludes with musical performances and the midnight fireworks display.
Organized by the Municipality of Acerenza together with the Archdiocese, the Feast of Saint Canius is an event that combines spirituality, identity, and popular celebration in the heart of Basilicata.
