The patron saint of Monguzzo between faith, tradition, and civic merit
In the Como area of Brianza, a short walk from Lake Alserio, the Municipality of Monguzzo, in the Province of Como, annually celebrates its patron saint Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr. The festival's heart is in the parish church of Saints Blaise and Sebastian, a building that has guarded the town's devotion for centuries — its original dedication to Saint Blaise dates back at least to the 16th century.
The festival is divided into two main parts. The first solemn mass is held on or around the saint's day, attended by civil and religious authorities: the mayor, the president of the Province of Como, and the president of the Valle Lambro Park. The following Sunday, the celebration reaches its peak, often with the presence of an Archbishop, the parish priest, and the mayors of neighboring municipalities, fostering a strong sense of community participation.
Among the most anticipated moments is the awarding of the 'Premio Biagino d'oro', the civic merit award with which Monguzzo recognizes the commitment of citizens and organizations that have distinguished themselves in solidarity and service to the community. This gesture links the religious and civil dimensions of the festival, highlighting the values of generosity and belonging.
The Feast of Saint Blaise is more than just a liturgical observance; it's the moment when Monguzzo reaffirms its identity, blending faith, memory, and community spirit. The strong presence of institutions — from the Province of Como to the Valle Lambro Park — testifies to the deep roots of this tradition in the Brianza region.
In 2026, Monguzzo will once again celebrate its patron saint, Saint Blaise. The saint's day falls on Tuesday, February 3rd, while the solemn celebration in the parish church of Saints Blaise and Sebastian is expected on the following Sunday, February 8th. As per tradition, the masses will be attended by civil and religious authorities from the region, and the 'Premio Biagino d'oro', the town's civic merit award, will be presented.
The detailed program will be announced by the parish and the Municipality of Monguzzo closer to the festival date.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the parish and the Municipality in the weeks preceding the event. Based on established tradition, the festival includes:
